Hydration pack water tube winterizer

aaaaand added to the list of things to get... :D

I had some problems with my camelbak tube/valve freezing up this winter. Found that if you blow air back through it to get the water out, that helps a lot.

Very nice!! Thanks for the tip!! I had alot of problems with mine freezing up this year. This looks like it should help.

Thanks
Boone

I bought a HMK pack and hydration unit at the end of the year. Never got a chance to try it out though. Hopefully it won't freeze up, if it does I'll be buying one of these. Blowing back into the tube does help as Mule said.

I blow back into mine all the time which really helps as if the entire tube is frozen you're going to be thirsty. It just seems there's always just a liiiiiiitle bit that gets into the lower tube/bite valve and freezes solid.

Hopefully this will help, plus it's cheap. :D

Blow back into the tube, pinch off the tube right behind the bite valve and then suck on the bite valve. Then none will come back out of the bladder and maybe you'll get the rest out of the bite valve?

The BCA Stash packs have a 'freeze proof' system that works pretty well as long as you remember to use it properly. An insulated tube that is encompassed in a zippered compartment, as long as you put it back everytime, it works fairly well.

i just tuck my hose back into the bag, then it stays plent warm on my back, and i have my pack of plenty often to get out the shovel, and thats when i want water the most, digging. kinda silly to have to take it on and off, but it works

If you are going to do that why not just use a water bottle?

I blow mine back in durring the summer to that way I get cold water not warm water that has been sitting in the hose.

I find that a good Canadian 12yr old rye wiskey added to the water prevents ice up also!!:beer;:D
Thanks for the info.

This is the only way to go^^^^ been using it for years and nothing to buy or carry-blowing back does help with the bite tube. remembering the hand warmer is another thing to worry about..
Buy a system like the BCA that is designed for the elements, and reduce your issues

main issue i have with mine is the bite valve freezing...

i have the dakine pack which keeps the hose enclosed...and in a zipper pouch on the shoulder strap. i like the hand warmer idea. i'm going to try that this year on cold days..

I wear a Camelback hydration only under the jacket next to thermals. Body heat keeps it warm. Use the 100 ounce and DON'T fill it up all the way. The outer backpack all the other gear and is exposed to the weather.

For the hose ... it is inside the jacket and I unzip to get a drink. Plus the tube has a black insulator made of neopreme (just like wetsuit for water) from camelback.

I also put a dash of salt in the water which is good for the body (GATORADE DOES THE SAME THING) lowering the freezing temperature of the water.
