After being stymied by court decisions, Gallatin National Forest staff are inviting the public to take part in a community conversation about the future of recreation in the Hyalite Porcupine Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area.
The community discussion will be held at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, Building No. 1, on Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Fairgrounds is located at 901 North Black in Bozeman.
The Wilderness Study Area was designated in 1977 and is managed to allow uses occurring in 1977 while maintaining the area's wilderness character.
In 2006, the Gallatin National Forest released a Travel Management Plan that determined recreation uses across the forest, including within the WSA. The forest was sued over its proposals and lost in court. Now the forest staff is looking to the community to help determine the process for addressing recreation management within the WSA.
