How to stage a BB shootout?

With all the talk and battles between builders on Snowest....I thought it would be interesting to get some input on how to stage a proper BB shootout. I am going to try to make it a part of our Canadian Forum Ride and maybe youguys can do the same for the USA one.

What has to be considered?
-BB engine
-track size
-other mods, such as clutching, suspension, shocks or do these mods even matter
-size of rider
-side by side races
-swap machines and riders
-first to a marker
-straight hill climb or boondocking Considering its a shootout I would think hill climb only as boondocking has a lot to do with rider skill

PLease lets make this a friendly thread with NO NAME calling or builder bashing.

Lets make it happen and let the sleds do the talking !!!

Suggestions?

I can see the track size and suspension being the problem with doing any field testing shootout , eg. you can have the same sled , both BB ,one stock track and skid , the other has a 3" track and aftermarket skid , who do you think will win a hill climb , the only way of testing is putting them all on the same dyno , but this sounds like fun , should be good to watch

What's wrong with the online pissing match? In the end that's why people buy, who wins the pissing match.

BB Shoot out

all kinda of variables. I think it is an awesome idea though. I know someone suggested money and I would say that in my mind is a bad idea. I would also suggest a lower elevation area 5-7000 just so you don't look horrible in front of the turbo guys. I know a turbo makes me feel bad @ 10,000 ft. The other thing is snow. I would think you would need stable snow and a large long straight hill where rider ability was not a factor? point and shoot type. In my mind if you do not do this the you are no longer judging the engine and set up but rather rider ability and I know a couple guys that could make my 872 look like chit with a 600. Maybe you could set up lodging at a discount group rate thing. Maybe some sort of patch for participants? Possibly a social hour at a lodge with beer possibly food? Just some thoughts.

How are you going to get liability insurance? What happens if someone gets hurt? Ever hear of the BIS and subsequent avy deaths? Wasn't even part of the shootout and people are still looking for someone to blame.

Ya....don't want this to be a santioned event or invitational or anything fancy. No waivers or prizes or liability but just some guys who want to compare machines. Ride at your own risk. We do it all the time when we go to the hills...ride at your own risk. You line up against someone for fun and see who wins.

I suggested the forum rides as there will already be lots of BB there.

The elevation is key and turbos will kick azz....no doubt.

Point and shoot from the same starting line and the highest wins.

Poach a line and your out....that's cheating.

Always going to be sooooo many variables. Just try to make it as fair and fun as possible.

The question is......is there a fair way to compare BB sleds when no 2 are the same?

I don't think you try to run BB vs BB... But build vs build? A setup is what really defines a sled. Morso than "just" a big motor? I would suspect you could find comparable sled builds to bracket...

Call the speed channel and have them set it up??lol
Be better than a lot of the other crap they produce .

One of most difficult things to do in sledding is finding two side by side lines that are equal, especially in virgin snow. In the area I ride we have a slope nicknamed launch pad where we can get a pretty decent comparison and eventually declare a winner by switching lines a few to several times. If a sled can outpull another in both the slow lane and fast lane it's easy to declare a winner. We don't even attempt to declare a winner in virgin snow since it's usually a waste of time. We begin by running dozens of sleds up and down the slope several times trying to create several potentially equal lines, then let the drags begin.

Sundance Mt. Lodge Priest Lake

I have 160acers to test ride on and a frozen lake in front of the lodge to drag race. Only have 10 rooms 18 beds but have great food and great riding out my front door. Hill climbs could be done only 15 min ride from lodge.

Run it in a similar fashion as they would run a 'cheaters day' at the race track. Basically anything goes and set up classes by track size. Would make it a good fun shootout and the results could be hashed over on the forum for months.

The other thought would be to have Snowest add big bore and aftermarket suspension categories to their deep powder challenge. Perhaps the suspension classes would have to run stock motors, transmissions, and tracks. The big bore categories would have to run stock suspension, transmissions and tracks.

Each would garner some free publicity for the big bore builders and suspension tuners plus Snowest. Also, there would be plenty of bragging rights for forum members. Both events would keep the chatter on here going for a good long time.

Sure sounds like fun to me!

as I said before, grab three stock xms, throw trigs on one, bjs on another, and a aerocharger on the third, over the coarse of a day it will become evident how they stand up

now if its run what you bring... it will be a bit harder but more fun, light light light and big tracks will win with good setup

The only "fair" way is dyno runs, at the same place, at the same time.

Otherwise it's just a "run what ya brung" scenario.

And whomever suggested stock clutching.....I bet a shiny nickel a stock sled will outperform ANY BB if they have to keep stock clutching.

You see sleds with 30-40-50 more HP lose in all types of situations because their clutching/gearing isn't right.

These are the reasons rags don't do aftermarket shootouts such as this anymore. The variables are staggering.

Keep it simple, "Run what ya brung" and hoist a beer to the victor afterwards.
