well i bought a used cpi can for my 900SB and from the outside it showed very little wear, but after turning it upsidedown and hearing something rattle inside, i knew she may need re-packed! at first glance these cans may seem as though they can't be serviced. but its quite the opposite!
once disassembled i found that both of my canisters were TOTALLY void of any packing !
start by cutting the 3 small tack welds around the bottom of each canister. lightly tap the bottom y-pipe and end caps off of the canisters. blow any debris out of the cans!
then measure the insde length of the canister, and mark that length on a piece of 1-3/4"ID tail pipe ($6 at autozone)!
then un roll an entire package of 2-stroke exhaust packing ($10 at your local dealer) and cut forementioned length out of the narrow width of the packing, you will need the entire length of the packing for 1 canister! i used 1 bag of packing for each individual canister
next, wrap the packing around the piece of 1.75"tailpipe, getting it as tight as possible without ripping the material, then wrap the packing with a thin steel wire to hold it on the tailpipe!
then simply slip the tailpipe over the perforated core of the CPI canister, while holding the packing firmly on the tailpipe and using a spiral motion shove the packing into the can until your mark on the tailpipe is flush with the open end of the can! wrap your fingers around the tailpipe in order to hold the packing in the can, and pull out your piece of tailpipe! VIOLA!!
lather rinse and repeat on the other canister!
after i was done i ground off the tack welds and used 3/16" SS rivets to re fasten the end caps, just to make it easier next time around!
dont know why just thought i'd share this! lol hope it helps somebody out down the road!
