How to rebuild the recoil? 2000 MM

Hey all,

I went to start my snowmobile out west and the rope would not go back in. So, took the recoil off, took the 1 main bolt off the front, but the actual coil that the rope goes around will not come off. I suspect I have a spring behind it that is broke.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Jon

As long as the other stuff is off wiggle and pull with some LIGHT prying. But remember WATCH YOUR FINGERS. That spring can bite. My guess is the spring has tension and is snagged on #3. So it is bound up on the shaft. Do not be supprised if the spring comes out with #3.

need more advice

So I got new spring - old one broke. Assembled back together - now how does rope get sucked up in recoil? Somewhat confused. Do I have to wind it up or something? But then how would I get on sled?

I would have thought the recoil would suck the rope in....

You will need to wind the spring up. After you have the assembly back together. Keeping the rope through hole in the housing.( I put a knot light in the end so it will not come back through) #3 (drum) has a little notch in it for the rope to go in. Pull a loop out of the rope between #3 and #2(housing) align the rope in the notch in #3. Wind the rope around the houseing putting more tension on the spring. I wind it a couple times then pull the rope out and let the spring pull it back in and see if it is tight enough. Do this a couple of times to make sure of the results. If it is not wind it a couple more times. If you got a factory length rope the will be 12" or so of rope that will not go into the housing. This is because there is so much rope already in it it will not take it all. That is fine. You need 18" or so to reach from the recoil up to the handle on you stearing loop anyway. Once you have the spring tensioned. Attach the assembly to the motor. Pull enough rope out so you can put the housing on the motor and have the rope reach through the stearing loop. ( To attach the pull handle) Ether tie a pull loop in the rope. (OR a pair of vise grips on the rope so it will not go back in). Then feed the rope around the chain case and up through the loop in the stearing loop. Then attach the handle. And now your done.

Sorry it was a little long, hope this helps.

Thanks - I figured it out after I wrote post. Dumb me.

Last question, I mounted the recoil on and it started - which is great. However, I have a loud clicking sound coming from the recoil. I suspect I did not put on the spring (#7) on part #4 right. Should the edge of the spring be on the top or bottom of part #4? Meaning, right now my part number 4 is pressed out to catch the wheel motor (spring is on the bottom side. Should it be in one of those holes on part #4 or on the top of it? I had it on the top the first time I mounted the recoil but when I pulled the rope part #4 was not catching the motor wheel.

As you have figured out. I think #7 is just in wrong. It is hard to remember how it looks off the top of my head. I will look at my extra one when I get home tonight at see.

I have attached a couple pics. I removed #8 &#9 and took the pics.

To start Remove#6, #10, #7, #4, #11, #8 & #9

1- put #7 in one leg of the spring is longer then the other put the long leg in the hole in #3.
2-Looking @ #4 in one side is thicker then the other. On the thicker side (Left side in my pic just above the empty hole)there is a little dent in the out side (being the top in my pic) put the short leg of the spring up to that notch and twist clock wise until you can push in down over the peg in #3. This will put a little tension on the spring and hold #4 against #3. (On the left side).
3- place #6 spring in place over the center shaft.
4- Place #10 on #6 with the dog ears up toward #8. (See pic)
5- Place #11 on top of #10
6- Then #8 & #9. tighten and done.

Hope this helps.

I have done a lot of basket cases. (a person takes something a part and then brings you a basket full of parts and wants you to put it back together)
The microfishe are life savers. Check it piece by piece to make sure you have all you need. As far as assembly goes they are not allways the greatest. As in the one we are looking at (link above) it shows #10 facing the wrong direction but it is in the correct location. Just an FYI.
