How to gut the stock airbox?

I have never done this so i was looking for some help. Are those plastic fins sticking up from the bottom of the box the things I need to cut out? Also, is there anything i need to do with that top cover part and the hole where the air enters? Thanks. I am also ordering some intake vents to go along with it if that matters.

Remove the perimeter screws #3 and then take out all baffles inside the airbox. Then put cover back on.

So when i did open up that top cover (16) There was nothing there. So does this mean the previous owner removed them? Also, is their baffles inside the airbox and do they need to be cut out?

You actually have to remove all the perimeter screwes (#3) and open it up.... You will remove all the baffles and the tube with perforations inside.

But do the baffles have to be cut out or do they screw out? I looked in there and i did not see anything that would screw out. The previous owner may have removed them already.

They are held in my simple tabs.

Did you remove only #16 or ALL the screws and separate the top and bottom halves of the box?

I did separate the top from the bottom and did not see those tabs. So I am pretty sure they must have been removed. I will check it again but thanks for the help.

Post a picture of the inside of your air box, and someone can see if indeed the baffles have been removed. You should be able to hear a loud throaty noise coming from your clutch side if they have been removed. I can here mine over the stock exhaust.

I was just thinking that same thing. Does anyone have photos of the airbox inside with the baffles in and out? I tossed mine in the dumpster about 5 years ago or I would open it up and take some.

The top cover (16) sits behind the left hood vent when you have it off you may
want
to install a vent ( SLP small round ) in that leading edge for extra air flow.
It looks like it was a thought at the engineering level at one time at it is shaped perfectly for a ram air type system with a little exta foam applied.

It sure didn't hurt any! And remove (15) from the lower half and look !! And make sure (14) is not torn? As well as (6) TB boots.

Here's a pic of what you need to remove from inside your airbox if it is still in there. Just gutted mine a couple weeks ago, still had the guts laying in the shop.

Thanks for the info and pics everyone. I am pretty sure those parts were removed but if i can get down to my dad's garage after school I will get a picture.

Did you guys remove the foam from inside the box that used to seal the baffles? I'm thinking if it is left in there, it may become loose over time and get sucked into the motor?

I'm planning on removing it unless I hear otherwise from you guys!

You will need to remove anything inside of the air box, but leave the foam seal for the hood gap and rubber fitting to the intake opening.

silicone between 15 and 16 also can drill holes under that top one on that small deck. I've had mine out since day one back in November of '04 and I really think it did something in comparison to other "stock" 900's
