How much coolant?

Does anyone know how many quarts or gals of coolant should fit in a 2001 mountain cat 800 with stock cooling in place? My last motor seized due to head gasket leak cause I thought I was searching for a hose leak. With new motor install and the cooling system drained I have put almost 1 gal of coolant in. With very short run times the bottle will drain (5 min). The exchangers are getting warm. Any info would be great.

It holds close to a gallon. It takes several warm up and burp sessions to get all the air out of the system. When I fill an empty system I take the thermostat cover off the engine, take the thermostat out and fill the tank until the antifreeze fills the engine and comes up in the t-stat manifold. Put everything back together and then run it a few times to get the rest of the air out. It usually only takes a couple burps instead of a half dozen. It also makes sure your engine has coolant and doesn't seize up from no circulation due to an airlock. Hope this helps.
 
Kinda hot

I seem to have one cylinder that is hotter than the other. The cap on one is hot to the touch after idling for a bit and the other is just warm to the touch. Could this be an airlock in one cylinder?

Also this has the oil pump removed. Do I need to do something for lube to the water pump shaft? If so how often does this need oil and what kind and how?
 
It could be that one cylinder is running better at idle than the other, hence more heat. I would check the pilot jets and see if one is partly plugged. Also check the air screws and fuel screws and set them the same on both carbs.
When the oil pump is removed there needs to some arrangement made to lubricate the shaft that it was on which also runs the water pump. It is usually done by drilling a hole from one part of the crankcase so a little oil can get into the center where the shaft is. Another way is to put a grease fitting on the cover that blocks the hole where the pump was. It is easy to check for the grease fitting but to look for the drilled hole you have to take the engine apart.
If the engine has been run for some time without the pump it is probably a safe bet that one or the other of the fixes has been done.
