How much are we getting ****ed?

Somewhere between too dumb to quit and flat earth
Ok so about 3-4 months ago I was cruising a lot and seen a Chevy work truck that looked like a semi front end that was lifted up and was 4wd. They wanted about $79,000 for it. I thought wow; I got to get me one of them!

Well yesterday I was driving by and seen it was still there. I stopped by and looked at the price and was listed at $59,000! That’s $20,000 they took off!

I am ok with a mark up. I buy American everything and I bereave (yes I spelled that wrong on purpose) that if you drive a foreign car you can’t say **** about our economy but that how much of a mark up is there on vehicles? Take a standard Chevy truck.

Its 4 doors, 4wd, has a deramax and makes tones of power. You can probably get about 10 years out if it and not service anything to bad. That’s fine and dandy but they are (were) $50,000. My house cost $150,000 and it has a hell of a lot more time and design work in it. Also it is worth about $380,000 after 10 years. So that truck you bought for $50,000 is going to only be worth $7,500 in 10.

So why so much? You’re telling me a mass produced product can cost $50,000? That’s more that the average persons income is for a whole year!

How much of a mark up do you think is on the new vehicles? 20%, 50%, 200%?

GM and Ford weren't complaining when they were making tons of money selling SUV's and trucks to those that really didn't need them...

They have the highest profit margin, with small cars getting much less. Or so I have heard...

I am guessing around 5-10% on cars 20-30% on trucks / SUV's.

Time out. A Duramax is made by Isuzu, a Polaris has a Suzuki Spirit Engine, You only buy American, Yea right. We won't start talking about the rest of your comments because I dont think its worth it.

Polaris uses "Liberty" engines made by Polaris here in the US of A

Talk about comment not being worth it:rolleyes:

Excuse me. I am wrong. Polaris engines are made by Fuji. Spirit engines are Artic cat. All Jap.

Last I heard, all the Liberty engines are produced in Osceola, WI and owned by Polaris.

As for American vehicles, some Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks are made in either Canada and/or Mexico. And then Honda and Toyota have plants here in USA.

Can't keep straight who is USA or not.

Those type of rigs have a huge markup. They figure if you have the money to buy one your not going to pick apart the price too bad. Around here they love to throw some aftermarket wheels on a new rig and tell you they cost 8k with tires. In reality those wheels and tires cost 4. However with the different look it gets people in the door. The same goes for sleds with their "dealer" builds. I really don't think they make as much as you think on the average 4 door Dury. The big three have wasted too much time on larger more expensive vehicles though. When you think of good value and efficient design names like, Civic, Camry, and Accord come to mind. The only car off hand I can even remember GM makes it the Vette.

And yes I know most products have a majority of their components farmed out but I still "buy American" as much as possible. It you don't think that matters anymore your a complete idiot. Rant over.

"My house cost $150,000 and it has a hell of a lot more time and design work in it." I really doubt a house has more design work into it than a car too.

a) You have a lot to learn - none of the subjects/industries you touched on are that cut and dry by ANY stretch.

b) At MSRP, average mid-high volume vehicles have average markups of 7-10% at the dealership level. This is before you get chiseled by the customer or manufacturer. This can increase for extremely low volume/high demand vehicles of course, and decrease for crap that's not selling, of course. Your example truck used to be the former, but is now the latter, hence the large discount.

c) Right now (and for many years prior) foreign automakers are the only ones contributing toward the American economy in a positive fashion, why the hate?

d) Just because a manufacturer sells something for a price that sounds expensive (to you) doesn't mean profit is being made. When compared to many other vehicles (lets say snowmobiles for example), new vehicles are some of the best values out there.

Chit, that's nothing. Saw a commercial last night and Cadillac is selling the new Escalade for the low, low, low price of 60k. WTF? In some parts of this country that will get you a small house.

i have heard. (doesn't mean fact) each vehicle has 1500 for employees retirement added in the price. each vehicle had $10,000 for warranty work figured in price. seems like a streach for the last one but i heard it off the news.

The Duramax was designed by Isuzu, but it is made in the USA. Get YOUR comments straight before correcting someone else.

Toyota's Tundra was designed and built in the USA. Automakers are the largest and most multi-national companies on the planet. Classifying what is built where these days is damn near impossible regardless of what emblem's on the front....
