How many secondary spring shims can I have?

I need a little more pre-load on my secondary spring. I have the stock Orange secondary spring and I already have two spring shims.

Can I add a third spring shim without any binding issues?

Or, what is a good secondary spring that is a little tighter than the stock 175-280 spring and still fits the stock 36* helix?

I have an 07M8 141 with the SLP kit and took one shim out to soften the spring to help the secondary upshift quicker, thereby creating more track speed, (in theory?)....It seemed to work pretty good....but found that I lost RPM(had to adjust weights) and a little backshift. I rode all last season and liked it. I would think if you went stiffer that it would be like being stuck in first gear?? The shims are there so the spring doesn't bind, not really for spring pressure adjustment, but it does work..... just my 2cents.

yes, by taking the shim out it will create more track speed (or a higher gear). I want to be a little lower geared. I am shooting more for RPM than I am for track speed. I ride from 9,000 - 11,000 feet. If I am going across a flat at 9,000 feet I am pulling 7950 RPM, which is ideal for where I want to be. But when I am climbing a hill I can't get above 7800 RPM.

I either need a stiffer secondary spring or more pre-load on my stock spring. I just don't know if 3 shims would cause it to bind. My best bet will probably be to go with a stiffer secondary spring. Not sure which one I want yet.

A friend of mine has 3 black spacers and one shift assist with no problems. It put him at 8000 rpm at 7000' and 8100 at 4000'. An increase of about 200 rpm but his upshift is slower, but nice backshift. I might add that he added one spacer to get the 200 rpm increase. He was already running 2 spacers and the shift assist.
 
when you get close to full shift out its so close to coil binding from when i tried it in the vise. you should be ok though with the 3rd shim. but its tight.

Unless you have a pipe kit or other mods on the 07' M8 I think anything over 7800rpm's is past the peak of your power/torque curve and you are actually loosing power. I got mine to spin 8k rpms on a few pulls and it felt like it was just making more noise and no more power. Added more weight and my best climbs came from 7600-7800 rpms
