How is Fairfield?

Was at Hill City - Just west of Fairfield today.

Drove from Boise to take a look myself. Low clouds mostly rain with some snow flurries and 36 degrees. Only patches of snow. Wanted to drive up to snowmobile park north of Hill City but road was a muddy mess. Looked at Malcomson Snow Park, west of Hill City and before turn off to Pine/Featherville, and more sagebrush/rocks then snow. We turned off of hwy. 20, towards Pine/Featherville, and went about 5 miles to see what the snow looked like and the water was running everywhere and not much snow.

We drove up to Fairfield on Monday 3-17 on the hopes of a ride. The parking area on the Wells summit road was not only completely lacking in snow, but it had actually dried out from the rain. We decided to drop the trailer there and drive up to see where the snow line was. Patches of Ice with 1" of snow on top in all the shady areas and nothing but dirt for over 3/4 mile. From there it was hard ice all the way to the area we call test hill, where there is a trail up to Wells summit and the road. If you could put a sled down there, you could ride, but there isn't anywhere to park or turn a trailer around. The sunny side of the mountain is almost completely melted away and the shady side isn't much better.

I wanted to check out the Couch Summit/Salt Creek area but my group didn't want to risk the avalanche danger in that area. Looking at the peaks, its probably a good ride if you can drag your trailer up to the upper parking area or even all the way to the summit.
