I checked the diamond drive oil at the beginning of the year. It was clean and looked good. I have got six rides out of this thing and I have gone through 2 top ends and now a diamond drive. Has any one else seen this? What would cause this?

I wanna know how it strips just one gear? Is it stripped all the way around that one gear, or did it just seize and strip the one side? Sorry for all the bad luck this season for ya.

Its stripped all the way around.
calgarysledguy, Thats the only thing I can think also, but you would think that I would have heard that gear being ground down. Any one have a planetary gear for sale for cheap?:face-icon-small-fro

These DD threads never get old...:face-icon-small-dis

Fun Facts:
- the DD is what it is, take apart and clean and inspect every 400ish miles or take the risk, stock or not, they all go boom!
- this suspect planetary gearset is the main problem with this DD...you can buy new one from BDX for $200, yes these are the same guys who make the DD, or you can buy one from cat for twice the price, same part
- the brass washers on either side of each outside gear is whats suspect....and this is the first place to look during routine manitenace
- you dont need to waste money on the newer gasket, RTV works great and has been working great since the 1950s....:face-icon-small-hap

call BDX, they are great to work with, and wil let you know what else needs to be upgraded, im sure the weleded gear thing is also needed, replace with a single peice

another fun fact:

some folks have a stack of DD parts:face-icon-small-dis.....and rebuild these plant gearsets, its a PITA to get all the pin rollers back in, but it works, special care to the used brass washers is needed

Sorry for yet another diamond drive thread. I had never seen this before. I was on black diamond web site and saw where you can buy entire new diamond drive for like $700 and you can buy the gears but they dont have any planetary's. I will give them a call tomorrow. Thanks

Arctic cat and the makers of the diamond drive can kiss my butt. This sled is going to cost me my marriage. Why can’t I get a sled that will run for more than one season? Maybe it’s time to get out of the sport.

Man, did you just get a $$$ parts quote or what... Sorry for your luck man, seems the DD isn't mans best friend.

Should think STM could make a business on a version for the M's to?

This would be the reason for a new sled and warranty along with a good dealer.

utahedge - is this planetary gear the only thing that is bad on your sled?.....everything else inside the gearbox looks good?

If so, drop the DD off at my house and ill have rebuild for free, as i have way too many extra DD parts and have rebuilt this suspect gearbox before

im out of town until sat night, should be able to get to it early next week....it should only take an hour

What about warrenty? i thought this sled was new last year?

were there any piece or shards in the oil you removed? did they grid off into metallic shavings or did you find actual chunks of gear all over the place?

I would be demanding an entire DD from cat. That is total BS.

What year sled is this on?

i hear Big Boys Toys treats customers very well in respect to warrenty..even if you bought the sled some place else

Hatchers, I just may take you up on this. I will pay you for your time. It ruined the gears also but a friend of mine had his DD blow up last year on his M8. He bought a used DD off an M1000 and replaced the gears. So he has M1000 gears that he is going to give me.
I wish I had a warrenty. It's a 2007 sled that I bought used last year. If I could afford a new sled with 0 miles I would. For the money that I spent on repairs this year I probably could have bought new.:face-icon-small-fro

There were 1 or 2 small chunks. The rest were shaving's.
