How fast a 440 will go....
OK...I hate to be long winded but... Many factors come into play. You ask "out of the crate". IT DEPENDS. Altitude, length of course, temperature, are the biggest factors. I've heard of a 1976 440 doing 96 mph in 660 feet - those are perfect conditions. And yes it does depend on gearing, studding (or not), altitude, temperature, rider weight, etc.
Many riders believe bigger is better. That may be the case with women, but a 440 will beat any average 600 or greater through the trails or a short drag strip if clutched right. The smaller engine means less rotating mass to produce rapid spurts of horsepower.
Sure, long haul, a bigger engine will be faster.
BUT IN TODAY'S WORLD, ALL OF THE 440'S ARE MADE FOR SHORT BURSTS OF SPEED (typically for snocross). They are capable of 100+ mph. Out of the crate, if you can get one, they are set up and sold to sno-cross racers only for the most part, and are only going to be geared for about 75 MAYBE. Imagine a snocross rider doing 80 on a track!? Ain't gonna happen. OUT OF THE CRATE THE 440'S ARE NOT GEARED FOR SPEED BUT THEY COULD BE. Nowadays, the 440's are set up for short bursts of speed. So they're not geared for a lot of top end speed.
By the way, I've raced semi-pro sno cross, cross country, drags, and mostly ovals, for over 25 years.
