How come no filters on aero turbos? Also Aero vs. Garret

Just doing some brainstorming for next year and was wondering how come nobody puts an air filter on their aero turbos? Boondocker comes with one for the Garret. Are the aero 53s so sensitive that they can't have any restriction? Seems like a bad idea to have an open turbo under the hood, pine needles, ice chunkes, belt particles.

Also if a guy was after a light weight, low boost (10lbs), minimal lag, is there any reason to go with a garret based turbo? I know the garret rules at higher boost levels. Even if boondocker comes out with an intercooler free lighter less expensive kit, why should it be prefered over an aero kit, assuming they continue to use soley garret? Is the Garret a "sturder" turbo?

I have an Aero, was told that putting a filter on could restrict airflow and flatten the paddles, and I haev stuff rolling around underneath my hood, never had a problem sucking anything it. Lag is minimal, but I dont care what people tell you, there is a tad bit of lag, not enough to complain about

You are asking some good questions. I have ran both these turbo's and will tell you what I have experienced.

I have ruined two 53's by having something go through my turbo. I don't know if it was, ice or whatever, but pretty costly and time consuming to get rebuilt. I won't run a turbo without protection on air intake.

You are right, as Freak has stated many times on this site. There is no such thing as NO turbo lag. I keep hearing that the Areo has less lag, and is designed to hold pressure to minimize lag. I have had much better luck with turbo lag on the Garretts. I currently run a 28-60 with a big intercooler, and with a tuned header lag is ALMOST non existance.

I have had to sit out lots of good riding waiting for parts to rebuild Areo's. I understand things have changed with the company that makes them, but evidently it is top secret information cause a few people have ask about it and nobody seems to have any answers. I am going to give it a year or two and see before I try an Areo again. I have a firend who has a new one on a D8. I'm hoping to ride it this weekend so I can compare the difference.

I wont run the Aero without a cage and screen. I use a modified Boondocker syatem on the Aero and it works great. I have watched it with the hood off under load and see no restriction or collapse. PLEASE NOTE: This is not a filter, just a screen over a cage.

Aero vs. Garret can be debated over each facet for hours. The basics are the Garret is easier and faster and cheaper to fix. My Garret builds power slower and in a different part of the RPM band and comes on stronger per pound of boost. My Aero builds it from the time the clutch engages and feels much more like a Supercharger. But if it breaks? Who knows the time and cost of that issue.
