How are the plastic chain case covers working

P3 ONES LOOK GREAT CANT WAIT TO ORDER ONE. ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH THE P3 ONE IS?
JT SPORTS DO YOU HAVE ANY PICTURES OF YOURS? OR A PRICE?
D.O.C. IS ALWAYS WAY OVER PRICED

Brett I am sorry but I call bs. I have seen older models take hits and other than a small gash I have never had to replace a cover. They were made to hold up. Did you deduct the 260 dollar savings from the price of my new kit. Just giving you crap but the older covers are better. The proto types had aluminum.why the change. My cover flexes with the side panel. It's not more stable, just look at the bottom. And then the smaller drivers:der:

Ok Gfeller, I'll do the cost difference calculations for you on the old vs. new cover, but I'll have to personally show you the finite element analysis image differences so you can see the structural improvements using the new cover.

Start by considering the structural differences between using tall standoffs and 4 internal bolts on the old cover, vs. 6 external bolts on the new cover, and leave it at that until you see the FEA images.

Old cover: $170
New cover: $40
170/40= 4.25 So you can crash 4.25 of the new covers before you equal the cost of the old cover, not including your time to pound out the old one.

You could also spend a bunch of coin on a guard for the new cover; and depending on the clearance between the two and the type of impact- you could either ruin the guard, the guard and the cover, or both AND a side panel. There's a lot of logic behind impact absorption design (new cover) and saving side panels.

I'm not suggesting you do or don't buy a guard for the cover. Just doing the math for ya.

There are many more substantial reasons for the cover switch that revolve around experience with thousands of kits and thousands of customers, not just your experience with them. I am only referring in part to economies of scale. Our objective is to continually develop new and innovative ways to push the sport to the next level.

Ok Brett, I give up. Love the kit, wish I had a better cover. Will carry a spare as if we break one we are done.....as far as the thousands of customers wanting a weaker cover, I wonder, this was brought up to me. Anyway merry Xmas, garry

I'm pretty sure Allen said something changed in the material and the original cases were much less prone to destruction. I believe he used the words could twist them inside out. Material changed and not as bulletproof as they are now. I don't think the left hand is talking to the right hand !! LOL

A moderate to heavy impact on the plastic cover will break it, but it will probably not keep you from riding out. A heavy impact on the aluminum cover might not break the cover, but it could totally wreck the side panel (and cover) and could make the machine un-rideable. You might not even be able to tow it home, and it will cost a lot more to fix it. I think it's a good move on Timbersled's part -- when they create a part that seems weaker than the previous version, it's for a good reason. Just my two cents.

might be worth it! if not you will just look super SLICK!:becky:

Sour, it looks like you only need the .25 of the cover. Brett told me I can buy 3.25 covers for the price of the good old ones :noidea:so just order the bottom 1/4.......now that was a worth while post....

We are currently testing an alternative chain chase cover.
Have frequently asked myself why this chain in perticular have to be enclosed.
Motor chain isn't covered in same manner.
By skiping the complete cover and adding a water jet cut cover, spacers and bolts all around the thain, stiffens tunnel panel and gives the assembly a lot more rigidity.
Easy to make by a machine shop with a water jet cutting machine.
If you make a series if covers the unit price is resonable.

Here's a pic of our first prototype made out of 8 mm aluminum.

A plastic cover will be made at the bottom sprocket.

Didn't notice this till the snow melted off the next day. $40 for new cover seems reasonable however I hope broken covers don't become a frequent issue. View attachment 245967

busted mine just like this last weekend. Still ran it two days straight with it broken. does not effect performance. The plastic covers do what they are supposed to do, take the impact of the initial hit of a rock or whatever before hurting the sprockets. $40 to replace is easy. I think this design is a huge step in the right direction for both functionality and replacement cost.

Getting upset over the plastic chain case cover breaking on a rock or stump you hit is ridiculous. that's like getting upset when hitting a tree with your Barkbusters and the plastic roost deflector breaks off.

If you are going to push the limits and bang up stuff is going to brake. If I run a rock section in the summer and I brake a chain. So the manufacture need to make a better chain. No you need to take responsibility and that you are crazy and ride smarter. Same with the kits or a snowmobile. Be a man and take responsibility for your actions.

No one likes breaking the same part over and over but I agree I think it's a step in the right direction. Rather a cover break than all that impact be transferred into the side panel, then you got all the sprockets and side panel bent out of shape. Although does seem like they need to look into some different materials, maybe look into what T.M. design works uses for their disk brake guards and things. Stuff seems really durable but not strong enough to brake your mounting tabs off your swingarm. I think you'd want something that would soak up the impact rather than just transfer the impact.

Speaking of chains and chain guides. Make the cover out of that thick plastic that chain guides are made of. seems like that stuff would chunk like thick wax before it would snap and crack.

JT/P3

THE P3 covers are designed and made to JT specs and distributed through JT. I have a few in stock but they are going fast. $160. 406-755-6229

Recant statment.

I have to recant my statement. I broke the bottom of my cover off yesterday. And I wasn't riding crazy. The plastic cover is brittle.

I cracked my chaincase cover on my 2015 LT. I like that it is designed to be a fail safe so the rest of the sled doesn't take the impact, but I do think that it could be a little more durable and not so brittle. The idea of using a different type of plastic such as the plastic that is used on the chain sliders seems like a pretty cheap and easy substitute for what is currently on the 2015. Maybe well see it on the 2016??
