How am I going to get this off? Help!!!

Last ride of the year and the clutch broke in half. Took out the center bolt and if fell apart. Trying to figure out how to get the half off of the crank. Any suggestions..

What would cause this? I dont want to put another clutch back on if there is something else going on to cause it to fail.

plazma cutter. Some people use oxy/acetalene torch but its to much heat IMO.

How many miles on that clutch?

Been there, its not fun. We take a good cut off wheel and start cutting through the clutch vertically. Be CAREFULL not to cut into the crank. Cut down very close to the crank and then get a really wide chisel and start tapping on it TOWARD the engine. Do not pound on it in a fashion that will stress the crank end. If you have your cut close enough to the crank it will split and come off. It usually takes 2-3 hours to do it.

I think a plasma cutter is too much heat as well as a torch. If it were me I would make sure to do a runout test on the crank when the clutch is off and the crank end is cleaned up.
:beer;

Might be able to use a die grinder and cut off wheel, or 4" grinder with same wheel. Have to be real careful though don't want to get into the crank. Grind a V the length of the shaft. Just look at the end of the crank to see how deep you are grinding into the center shaft of the clutch. Once you get through most of the metal of the clutch take a chisel and medium size hammer and hit the V where you ground out the metal but hit at an angle not straight down on the crank all along the length of the V. This might loosen the shaft enough to get it off. Wow tried to post and got beat by RACINSTATION to the punch!!!

run cold water on crank and carefully weld a nut on and use a clutch puller. if using cut off wheel be very careful sometimes it is very hard to determine how deep you grind as the metal bonds together from grinding.

I would try to tack weld the end with the threads back on and then use your AC cluch puller befor i started cutting on it. I have had to cut one off befor because the threads where gone, it was no fun and took alot of time.

I would weld and pull, if you try cutting then pushing or hammering take the flywheel of so you dont accidently knock of a magnet.

good luck!

I read this earlier and was waiting to see responses.

I was thinking die grinder also, but this sounds like a good idea. there would be enough heat after welding it that it should pop right off.

the average person usually wont get enough penetration for the wel to hold so if you not good take it somewhere to have it welded. when welding just make sure the heat doesn't get back to the crank seal. may have to weld half cool and finish.

Die grinder.... couple hrs..... and a cold rack of beer!!!

Done that on many of my old EXT's when they seized on the crank. Sucked when the clutch was actually still good but had to cut it in half just to rebuild it:mad::mad:

Using heat will kill your seals and gaskets btw;);) been there done that!!!

gouge around whats left of clutch this will expand clutch. then use a bearing splitter and puller, if not familiar with what im talking about just google bearing splitter and you'll see where im going with this.
