Talk about one tough owl. Police in southern Indiana said a great horned owl flew through the pre-dawn darkness into the front of a moving Ford F-250 pickup truck - and survived even as the collision mangled the truck's radiator.

The bird was left trapped inside the grill of the truck driven by James Ellis of Shoals. A Dubois County sheriff's deputy called a state Department of Natural Resources officer to the scene Thursday on U.S. 231 near Haysville to remove the owl

Conservation Officer Tony Mann said the bird was conscious and appeared to have a broken or dislocated wing and assorted scrapes. He was able to free the owl and sent it to a wildlife rehabilitator in Vincennes for treatment.

A wrecker was called for the truck.

I hit an owl about midnight between Hays SD and Eagle Butte SD. I swear its wingspan was as wide as the pickup. At least that is how it looked before I closed my eyes. Killed the owl and had to by about 200 dollars worth of plastic for the front of the pickup. Course I was driving a Dodge and not a Ford. No wrecker for me, I guess you could say I RAMMED it:D

Owl Murderer!!!!!

My freshman year of college I hit an owl one night right around the state line between Laramie and Fort Collins. It flew out of the trees, smacked my grill (broke it), did a sumersault in the air and kept flying. I was going 60-65 mph.

I cleaned out my shorts and was thankful it didn't hit the windshield.

Yea; they're big bastards.

Silent when they fly too. Had one come real close to me (within 10ft) at rampart last week. Didn't hear a damn thing, but that sucker was close.

I've had that happen out hunting...all you hear in the woods is the wooosh woooosh of the wings.
