Hooded and Non-hooded carbs.

What is the difference between the two? As far as jetting? Say the non-hooded carbs have 430's what is the equivlent in a hooded carb?
 
Hope this helps???? I installed the hooded jets in my 02 800, stock jetting was 500 mains. I started droping jet sizes and ended up with 410 mains with the stock engine. Dino
 
My 02 carbs had the crappy carb and dpm calibrations, blubbery off bottom, hot midrange.Had jetted down to 490 mains,17.5 pilots, non-adj. needles# 9ZLY6-58, non-hooded needle jets.
X-treme Perf. did their pricey recalibration to hooded needle jets and adj. needles, part# 9DFM2-59,310 mains,15.0 pilots. DPM was removed, vented carbs to airbox, J-H PowerJets installed, RKT 14.5:1 head, never looked back. Last week was the first I've had to do any carb tuning (bout forgot how:eek:) cause of BJ's 840HO break-in.

Pulls hard, still gotta fine tune clutch weight.

Tackbtch- sounds right for jet size, been a long time since stock. Didn't these carbs come with 420N mains? which were way rich? 420 N=500?? something like that

My 02 came stock with the 500 mains and 17.5 pilots..witch was supposed to be doos upgrade for higher elevation riding. 500Mains were way rich , dropped to 480s right away. Yes I also changed my carbs for the same reason u did. I went with the CPI kit back in 04 ... has been good since then. Now run with the RKT drop in piston kit and run with 370 mains and found that 17.5 pilots work the best for me. Needles set one slot up from the bottom ..or richer. I mostly ride between 2500-6000 feet. Dino
