Ive been eyeing some suspensions i understand how a coupled skid works but iam not seeing how the holz is any better then the stock skid with good shocks? How does a holz skid get you up on the snow better?

the new pro skid is real real close to a holtz. and I don't know how much you gain with the holtz in a pro.

I do know in the Iqr it was a huge advantage, there was no comparring a stock skid to the holtz Alpha. No matter what kind of shocks you had. It would get on top of the snow so much better and quicker that a stock skid. (IMO well worth the money on those sleds). As far as skidoo or cat have nothing to compare with, never road either with after market skid.

It's got to be better....it's after-market! Manufactures never make as good of stuff as the after-market boys do, you gotta read up!

I would be interested in comparing the older coil over Vs. the stock Edge chassis suspension as I am in the market for a used Holz coil over. Is it worth the upgrade on an already dated chassis?

The Alpha dominants in the older sleds. (When it comes to MT. riding) Very limited on trail type testing, such as drag racing, High speed bumps.

The Holtz coil over Dominants the stock edge skid! (When it come to Mt. riding), played with this for several yrs. back in the day. I have only delt with the Polaris when it comes to changing skids. Back then we all had Poo of one yr or another. 01 to 05 we where all at one stage or another when it came to aftermarket rear suspention. And all had preaty much the same motor, and or Mods to motor. No big HP diffrence.

There are many on SW that could be a bit more instructive when it comes to the new Pro and there skid. I was told that the new Pro skid is extreamly close to the holtz. So IMO why would you pump another 2200 bucks into something that is that close in comparison. But like I stated my dealing with the pro skid and the holtz Alpha has been very limited. I just know that the pro gets up on the snow very well!

I looked nobody has any info on how or why it works better then a stock suspension that looks pretty much the same, why would you choose it over a kmod or timbersled they are a coupled skid and its obvious as to how it works and performs better then stock

I sent a message off to Doug Miller... he worked with Struthers a lot during the development of the original Holz suspension. This is what he sent me.

drmiller100 - Doug Miller says

The Holz suspension (actually originally designed by Jack Struthers almost 15 years ago) uses a coil over in the back of the skid.

A traditional scissor pushes down on the suspension in 3 places - front shock, front of rear scissors, and back of rear scissors.

Struthers Coil Over pushes 95 percent down on one place - the very back of the skid.

This does a few things. It makes it so the front of the skid is free to tip up, and climb on top of the snow. This makes the skid climb through deep snow much better.

Another thing, all the force on the back of the skid does is keeping the sled from tipping back when climbing a steep hill - the spring has the best leverage to keep the snowmobile from rearing back too far.

Another thing this does is free the suspension to move more. It makes the suspension more dynamic - giving more lift at slow speeds on throttle and making the sled feel lighter then it is.
