Holz/IQR Spindles on the IQ.....????

Guys, I made and interesting discovery the other day. I am running the Polaris IQR (race) spindles on my 06 Switch. Made a great improvement on the steering effort compared to the original spindles but I had always thought the turning radius seemed a bit reduced - I also have a 2010 RUSH so that is what I was comparing it to. I honestly did not really think much of it and just assumed it was the IQ chassis vs the newer Rush chassis.

Then the other day I was getting things on my 900 ready for my trip out west this weekend when I noticed these rub marks on the back of the spindles. Now I know why the turning radius seemed limited.......it physically is.

We were just talking about this in a different thread a few days ago. http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257468

Has anyone else installed the HOLZ spindles or the Polaris IQR spindles on their sleds and seen this issue? I have the parts with me at work today and we are looking at machining some material off. Trying to figure out how much I should remove.

I looked at the photos of the HOLZ spindles online and they appear to be the exact same as the Polars ones.

Holz spindles do this. I had them on my 05 and they did the same thing. The factory polaris spindles have a stop on them and the Holz do not so they kit the A-arms at full turn. It is only cosmetic and doesn't hurt anything.

The original Holz spindles were for the 05 900 geometry, to use 05 Holz on a 06 you had to remove some material.

Holz instructions do not say anything about this. I had mine on an 05 and they hit exactly like in the picture I posted. (I think those were Polzinhunters). The only thing mentioned in the instruction concerns the spacer the steering bolts into.

I just looked and Holz doesn't even list them for sale on their website anymore.

I do not remember if it was in the Holz instructions at the time, but it was on the forums.
I installed them in 06 on a 05 with a 06 A-arms and had to remove a nice sized notch.

KSH......I dont suppose you recall how much material you removed do you?

Z-Man......you mentioned before about the stops on the A-arms - I always thought the actual stops were those 'ears' on the bottom of the steering post....?

Nonetheless - good info. Thanks for the help guys.

I've never looked closely at the steering post but there could be stops on there too. If there is I wonder why Holz did not machine these out more so the stops there would be functional.

I think I would take the shock off and carefully grind a little at a time, cycle the suspension to check clearances, you don't want to take off any more than you need to.

I see these on all IQ's, RAW's. Even the Stock IQ spindles start rubbing and take away material. It's no big deal if you want to grind a little off to increase steering radius. I've seen this done on quite a few sleds that have them on.

OK.....took some material off and we will see what happens.

Thanks again Boys. Now I need to get home and get this pig back together - heading to Cooke City here in 3 days..........:D

I just removed enough so they did not hit when I turned the steering.
I believe Sean purchased them from me.

yeh i am not sure if i did or not Roger, lol...

i have3 sets of the Holz on my sleds...

1 set is the older vesion for sure, no notches taken out..non-adjustable width as well..

1 set has a notch taken out (from holz) and it steers VERY nice and sharpe, and is non-adjustable width

1 set is the new 09 style, has same notch removed as above and IS adjustable and steers VERY nice and sharpe...

but i didnt look to see if they are contacting the arms, but i think the oldest set i have is for sure, its not steering worth a damn IMO.

i might just take them all off and grind off some of that as well, i would rather the steering column stops the steering angle then the spindle hitting the arms...

when i get some time i will look into that as well and post my results...lots to do to the sleds first and will be in revy next week..so after that im sure.

great write up here...

Yeah Sean - I would agree. I would prefer the steering post to be the stop vs the spindle against the A-arm.

Sean - I never did get that Boondocker Controller on the sled.......damn it!!!! Too busy with work and too many other updates to the sled that I wanted done before I head out to Cooke this weekend. That may have to go on the summer 'to do' list now.
