GoPro released the Hero 3 and dropped the Hero 2 $100. Was just at Best Buy and the outdoor edition is $199!!!!

I was looking at the GoPro website to understand the differences. There are 3 different models of the Hero 3. The top line has a higher Frames Per Second and a higher still resolution and built in WiFi. Past that you'll have to go take a look and see.

It's all about specs and wifi. Basically its a bunch of larger numbers. 1440p48/1080p60/720p120 fps.

The real difference as far as I'm concerned is HD3 does 120fps at 720p. Think sloooooww mo. You know like that 509 RED EPIC trailer where everything is in hyper crazy slo mo, that's 120fps but on a real professional camera. Kinda like that, except this is the uber 'cheap version.' $400 cheap.

It's also slimmer. So you have a smaller sized stupid box on your head. Everyone should have a smaller stupid box on their head.

Well thats just great...reading this post just cost me $199 bucks tonight, lol.

I've been looking at GoPro2's for a long time, but just couldnt pull the trigger on $299 bucks....I was getting really close though!

So, as soon as I saw this post...knowing full well we have a Best Buy just a few blocks down the road from our house I jumped in the car, ran down there and ta-dah, there they were.

Two left on the shelf at $199.

My gal and I snowmobile together, jet ski together, quad ride together...well you get the idea, were kinda like peas & carrots, lol.

When I say ride together, I mean she rides hers and I ride mine...so I always figured it would be fun to record her riding in front of me so she could see what she looks like in action, lol.

Should be fun...thanks for the heads up on the good deal Dartos! :face-icon-small-hap

From the GoPro website.

Smaller, lighter and 2X more powerful, again.
The Wi-Fi enabled HERO3: Black Edition is the most advanced GoPro, ever. No expense was spared during its development, resulting in a GoPro that is 30% smaller, 25% lighter and 2x more powerful than previous models. Wearable and gear mountable, waterproof to 197' (60m), capable of capturing ultra-wide 1440p 48fps, 1080p 60 fps and 720p 120 fps video and 12MP photos at a rate of 30 photos per second, the HERO3: Black Edition is the world's most versatile camera. Built-in Wi-Fi, GoPro App compatibility and the included Wi-Fi Remote (normally a separate $79.99 accessory) make the HERO3: Black Edition all the more versatile, still.

If I remember correctly the RED camera is 300fps at 1080p

The Red is also $50,000. Without lenses..

The Hero 3 BLACK edition is a sweet camera. There are a number of improvements from the past models. Like mentioned above, the Black edition will shoot 1440p at 48 fps 960p at 100 fps 720 at 120 fps and 10 at 60 fps. Can you say slow motion? 120 fps is more than most of us will even use. The Hero 2 shoots 720 at 60 fps.

The Black edition also shoots up to 4KP. Which essentially means better resolution. Now when we catch something cool of one of our buddies on the hill, but its too far away to really see it on film, we can zoom in while we're editing and it will be a much sharper image.

The still camera feature has also been dramatically improved. Its 12 MP and has a photo burst of 30 fps. The Hero 2 shoots 10 fps at 11 MP.

This camera will also have less distortion than the past two models. You can choose between Ultra-Wide, medium and narrow field of views. This will show how steep your side hill really was, instead of looking as if you are on flat ground. It also has a flat lens housing to help with this.

Not to mention it weighs 25% less and is much small than the other two. Add the app that lets you see through your smart phone, and the wi-fi remote. You can use this as more than a "helmet cam." At $400, its well worth the money.

I see only the Black edition has a glass lens.
It also is 4K capable at 12 fps. So who has a monitor capable of 4K (3840 x 2160)? I have a 27" Mac that is capable of 2560x1440 and it has a great picture. I can't imagine what 4K must look like.

At the lower end of resolution it will 240 fps in WVGA (800 x 480).

better sound quality on the 3 as well.

I'm biting the bullet and gonna order the 3! Up in Canada the 2 dropped to $300 and the 4 goes for $450, so well worth the extra $150 IMO

My comment about the red was more i remember that clip was shot at 300 and not 120 as stated but could be wrong.

The black edition at 1080 @ 60fps is sweet with a 170 fov will make for some awesome slow motion clips.

I wonder if they will ever do the wifi app for android on the 2 now? They just released wifi app for iOS on the 2. I noticed that the 3 comes with the android and iOS app compatible. That is a big thing for me, would like to take my old smart phone and use it as a view finder and remote for the cam.

The three is just another bump basically everywhere with the camera, even size. The new three is slightly smaller and weighs slightly less as well.

The three also has a new housing lens that is suppose to be better as well but from what I read, this will be most noticeable during underwater use.

Also the built in wifi compatibility and the the"black" comes with the remote.

Basically a little fancier and a little better then the GoPro 2 but honestly the two is a great little camera.

I'm tossing around upgrading too, the only reason is for the underwater application. I use my two for scuba diving and with the standard housing, it's just average for underwater use. The camera is cable of taking great underwater photos and video but you have to upgrade the housing. For sledding, the motorcycle and most other applications I've been very happy with the two.

I've talked to a couple "techie" guys I know, and they seem to lean towards waiting another year. You know GoPro will refine the three or have the four out next year.
