Hitch Flap

Do any of you guys use a removable flap that installes on the trailer hitch to keep the slop off the front of the trailer?

I was checking one out and thought I would ask around to see how they work.

Thanks

Mine really helps. I made it using square tube and some semi-type mud flaps.

It helps if the flaps are weighted to keep them more in the down position. This year I'm installing some heavy wire frame which drops down behind the flaps to hold them better.

I made my own as well. I used a heavy semi flap that doesn't bend easily and cut them down on a tablesaw (it stunk like hell! LOL) Total cost was about 80 dollars, mudflaps cost the most.

I have one that looks like a long skinny broom, works great, trailer stays pretty clean now. Trailer still gets a little on it but not even close to before. The only problem is if I leave it on my truck without the trailer I have a buddy that asks me if I'm sweeping the streets.......... If your thinking about getting one or making one it will probably pay for it's self with the money you save at the car wash. Just my 2c.

i was going to buy an aluminum salt shield this yr but i like blk88gt's set up. i might have to check into doing something like this. thanks for the post.

Blk88gt.. would you do anything different on your next one. Im going to build on soon.

I'll try and get some pictures tonight with some details of how I built it and why. A few people have asked for pictures and I'm sorry I haven't got them up yet.

I'm not sure I'd change much to be honest. Maybe simplify the way the flaps are held on, but that's about it.

Here's some pictures of how I built it. I used thick wall 1" square tubing and some rolled flat stock for the flap groove. I bought the best flaps I could get at the local trucking joint.

I slip this on, install the hitch pin and then tighten the jam nut to keep it from moving around too much. I made the flap structure adjustable up and down via the two bolts, but I never had to move it until I bought a new truck.

Yes, I know my welding is terrible and appears to be done by Ray Charles. This was my first welding project since high school and I've got a lot to learn!

i made a set from some 2" thin wall tube, a hitch extension and a trailer horse mat from the farm and ranch.

for whats it worth, you can get a mat like this for under 40 bucks

Have you guys pulled open place trailers with no salt shield. Im wonder how much that will stop.

That's all I've got is an open place for the sleds. It helps keep the spray down off the wheels in slushy or hardpack conditions.

I use the flap with my racecar trailer in the summer though!

I like the horizontal flaps on this one, I get a lot of stones that bounce up onto the bumper over 2000 miles when they're sanding the roads.
