It was a 53 to 47% result but Hiperion will proceed with the refinery in Southeast SD. First refinery built in over 30 years!!! They say it'll be a $10 billion project. I for one am surprised it was so close.

HOLY CR@P! That was a close vote... I guess not many politicians buy their own gas:confused::eek:

WAHOOO, finally a refinery that won't get destroyed every other year by weather!!!!! Now lets run some pipeline to MN!!!

Google- Hyperion Union County. The opposition is already talking about legal challenges on every permit request. The tree huggers are going to be the death of this country.

Sorry, I spelled it wrong.. Hyperion.

Here is a link to one of the local stations that have been covering it from the get go (a year ago). There are more link down at the bottom. Now it sounds like there is still a chance it might have to go somewhere else.

There should be a manditory registration and marking system for greenies.... anybody with the mark is prohibited from buying fuel, usine coal or cogen produced electricity, and can't buy paper products..... recycled chit tickets only!!!

its not the greenies talking for the most part, most of the resistance is coming from the local farmers and people in the town claiming that they dont want it in their back yard.

im so sick of hearing about all these people complaining that we need to do something about oil and we need to make more of our own, but when it comes down to it nobody wants to do it cause its in their area. it just doesnt make any sense. im still glad that it passed.

Same problem here.... everybody wants more for cheaper, but nobody wants to see the facilities (other than the people directly involved). Farmers want the cheques, but then rag on youfor being there, tourists want cheap fuel for traveling, but think pump jacks, wells and facilities tarnish the country side.... never ending struggle.

Pioneer built compressor stations in southern alberta that look like a farm yard.... to normal people passing by on the highway, you'd never know that it was a gas facility. It cost a little more, but it kept the area residents happy, and keeps the complaints down.

There are lots of little things that companies can do to reduce "whiner" impact, the problem is, every whiner is different and individuals are inconsistent.... Make em happy today, find something else to complain about tomorrow.

Quote in Hyperion Article. "Some worry the benefits outweigh the risks." What does this mean? Shouldn't The benefits outweigh the risks?

I'd be happy to be able to buy American. We need to produce more and buy less Foreign oil. The terrorists are loving the fact that they can set the price and we'll pay it, they are laughing all the way to the Nuke shop.

Granted it wont have any impact on gas price in the near future, or possibly forever, but it's a step in the right direction isn't it?

Very nice, I should get my API certs and see if I could get on that job. Going to be lots and lots of money to be had, especially if its like any other oilfield construction project I've been on before.

I hate to even comment on it because every time I think about all of the
obstructionists trying to hold our state back, I get so damned mad.:mad:

In the old days, the people fighting this would be found in a stream or
something like that.
I'm begining to understand those extreme measures.

This is either profound stupidity or selfishness.

If this were in our county & people were fighting it tooth & nail like that, there
would be many friendships lost.

will be great for us construction workers also, Might have to head that direction when it starts

it should be a great job with tons of openings. i live 60 miles from the site and am going to college now for an electrition so theres some real potential for some big bucks there also. It should be interesting

They are talking about getting the air permit later this year and starting the construction process by 2010

We've got a Soy processing plant going up about 5 miles from our little town. The local cement plant is counting it's lucky stars that thing came along this year. You see the contractors' pickups up at the local watering holes every weekend, the fuel they are using for their equipment is local, housing, etc... good for our little spot. So Elk Point should be preparing for a boom, at least for a couple years while they are building it.

Anyone move houses??? I've got one I'd like to send down there and rent out to them guys and then when they are done with it.... bonfire.

i also heard that they wanted to build a biodiesel plant down by vermillion and use corn stalks to process that. supposably they want to start building that by the end of next year

im not sure if its a go but i read that on a news website also
