Higher gears or more primary weight?

I have an 04 800efi mountaincat. I had it all set up with a 159 track with the stock 10tooth drivers. I let my buddy talk me in to putting on a 162 x 16 maverick we put in 18 44 gears and now im getting way to many rpms. Would i be better of to gear up or add heavier weights? Wish i would have just keep the old 159 it climbed better with that track, but im wondering if that has to do with the gearing and clutch setup now. When i first bought the sled it had a 151 then i put on the 159 didn't touch the gearing or clutching and it pulled it fine. What are all your guys ideas/ tips?

if you are pulling too many r's u need to start throwing weight at it till it falls off. That being said you still may not have the right gearing. You may want to try and touch base with some AC men who have experience with this. Good luck!

If you still have your old gears try them.

This track may not need lower gearing for you to spin the right rpm.

I always look at my free options first, if they do not work then go from there.

Add weight....gearing taller will actually raise RPM, all else remaining the same. Remember it's a load sensing system and with low gears it senses less load and upshift quicker/easier which drops RPM.
I would also not go smaller than a 19 on top....hard on chains, but that's another story. :beer;

Well i have hvyo gears in there and don't want to change back to my stock ones they are worn out. I'll have to see if my buddies have a 19 tooth top laying around. Then maybe i'll throw some more weight at it. What about a steeper helix?

Gearing/ clutching

Gear for your speed you run at. ( this is assuming you want a goodclimbing sled)

Clutch secondary to the load you're pulling.( track weight, size, rider weight, SNOW CONDITIONS etc.)

Clutch primary for target rpm / and to match secondary. Belt spinning in primary - raise finish on spring, add weight. Belt spinning in secondary - drop end rate on spring, drop weight to get rpm.
It's all about "balance" between the clutches AFTER you gear AND find the correct helix/spring to pull the load!!!!!!!!!

Here is the setup i have in the clutchs now and was reving about 500pms to much. Primary yellow/white with 616-66 cat weights, sendary green sno pro spring in sevcond to loosest hole and a 53 degree helix. It has always worked good before i changed the gearing and the track. If i pulled a camo 159x15x2" lugs would i pull the 162x16x2.25 with the same gears and clutching as the 159? Or should i just add weight? How many grams if i just add wegith?

Ended up finding a good 20 45 setup which is 2.25 ratio. Orginally i had 20 43 which is 2.15 and it worked good. And 19 43 which is stock is 2.26 ratio so im really close to the stock gear ratio. I think i was just stuck in a low gear. Hopefully i'm heading in the right direction with this.

Couple of suggestions:
You added more load to the system(bigger track), Drop down to around a STRAIGHT 49* helix. ( suggestion only, might need even lower angle) Stay with the Green Sno-pro spring.
Gear it down!!!!!
Weight and spring in primary to get target rpm. Probably need to stay 310# or higher end rate on the spring to get enough shift force out of the primary. Sorry, I don't remember AC primary spring colors versus #'s.
Big track = BIG load
Results will be:
Lower gearing - less load on clutches, closer to 1-1 ratio under full load = more "belt patch" (more surface contact with the belt)
Lower helix angle = more "squeeze" on the belt @ secondary clutch
Should end up with good solid rpm's in the climb & in and out of the throttle.
Good luck!!!

Just got home and it worked great. Pulling about 7500 rpms on a long pull. Geared at 20 45 with the above clutching setup i posted. Isn't trenching anymore eithor.

Glad you got it pulling again.

I have this same setup on my son's 900.

I run the stock 19/43 gears, 64 gram weights, 120-310ish primary spring, 51 degree helix and the red secondary spring in the center hole.

Holds the r's all day long and pulls hard. (Could maybe add two grams of weight)

you were geared way to low. Now that you have the gearing back to normal you should be good to go.
