high rev backfire issue

My 2009 Dragon 800 that has a rather elusive bog and backfire issue at high rpm/open throttle (7000-8000rpm). It starts fine, and idles fine (1550-1650rmp)

Prior to THIS issue I replaced coolant temp sensor (wires broke off).

Since the issue I have done the following:

changed spark plugs, checked wires (OK)
thoroughly cleaned throttle body, intake boot, and reeds (OK)
thoroughly cleaned the power valves (OK)
checked compression (110psi PTO, 105psi MAG)
checked cylinders for any signs of ring failure (OK)

What else?
Can an engine backfire due to a lean condition? Lack of fuel somehow? I was under the impression that this usually happens when it doesn't properly combust or too much fuel (rich)? Could the TPS have been thrown outa whack somehow? New temp sensor? Or strike me for saying so...a blown crank seal or crack in the case that I can't see?
What else?

Any and all feedback would be much appreciated!

fuel filter!

I figured it out...the inline fuel filter was clogged. Why do they make them so hard to replace? Had to replace the whole section of fuel line attached...expensive!
