High heat pipe coating??

Hello I was out at our local powder coaters the other day to get my snow eliminators and rear bumper and other parts powder coated the mating black/silver hammer tone coating the same as the AI 37inch A arms I puchased and asked about what they offered for a possible ceramic coating or high heat exhaust coating, like I have read and heard alot about how guys have removed the heat shielding and insulation from the stock Rev 800 pipes and had them coated and the coating held the heat in the pipe and didn`t have to reinstall the aluminum shielding and isulation.

My powder coaters has a high heat exhaust coating and it black or a dull silver, and I showed the shiny ceramic coating of my HPS Can and he said he has the coating like that, that is just doesn`t come out shiny like than cause they don`t have the machine that polishs it to the shiny luster and that they coat motorcycle pipes alot.

So big question do you all think this is the same type of coating like HPS, dynoport and other are using also and that the shiny finish is actually done by a machine to polish it he says you can polish it with like steel wool or possibly a buffer and it would be shiny too, I am actually only interested in the black finish, so is there different types of exhaust coating for the pipe like I mentioned or are they just a durable high heat coating that wouldn`t hole the heat in and make the pipe perform like intended or is this type coating just for durability and surface rather than what the after market pipe makers doo??

any info or suggestions would be appreciated, is it really a good idea to just have the pipe coated in the first place and remove the shielding and insulation? or does the coating actually perform better??

Is there a certain brand number or name to the coating the aftermarket does that would be different to local coaters and what would those be??

Thanks, Wildcard

The only true ceramic coating is a product called "white lightning" offered by swain tech coatings. But it's white in color so it won't match your hps can.

thanks for the reply, not to worried about it matchin the can just would like to have the pipe perform better if possible and shed the shielding if possible too, would look better than the rusty pipe covered with the shielding now.

I can't remember exactly, however there are two different temperature ratings. One is 1400deg(Or something around that mark...sorry, been awhile) and the other is something much less. The dull silver coating is the better of the two I'm told. And it can be polished to a chrome-like finish.

The cerma-crome (shiny) coating most pipe mfr's use is more durable than a true ceramic coating, but not as effective at reflecting heat. It starts out dull and is polished with something like glass or plastic beads.
The dull grey, flat black or brownish ceramic coatings (like your powder coater offers) are most effective to replace pipe insulation....but they do scratch easily.

Hello Winterbrew, what is the flat black or brownish ceramic coatings like my powdercoater offers called? is there all kinds of name or numbers for different coating like a powdercoating place would offer?

So when you go to purchase a pipe or can that is listed as ceramic shiny coated it that a true ceramic coating or are they calling it that cause thats what most of us beleive is the shiny polished coating you see or the glossy black etc..?

What do they call the better coating for a pipe like the 1400 degree stuff like Reeb mentioned and what is the other stuff?

Just trying to get some research done so I can go in and ask them some questions and get what I actually need rather than coating the pipe with something that wouldn`t be recommended for our pipes.

Thanks Wildcard

Go with the cerma chrome. I used it on my y pipe and Dyno port combo, looks and works great. Anything more is overkill IMO A good powder coating shop should have the capacity to have that finish polished for sure....

I showed a pic on my phone of the finish of the HPS can I have to my powdercoaters and he said he had that type of coating, but he didn`t have the equipment to polish it he did say others who use it that do have the equipment would polish it with some kind of machine and can`t remember what he exactly said it was, he said you could polish it with steel wool or somethin like that, I asked if you could do it with a buffer he said yes but would take awhile, well I am not much worried about polishing it to the chromy shiny finish I just want the correct coating.

so would this one be the cerma-chrome??

He was also showing me a dull gray and black finish he had but wasn`t exactly sure if it was the same stuff as the first I just mentioned or would work.

If your stock pipe is in good condition I would honestly just polish the aluminum shield if your going for look.. I see no performance gains coating your pipe. I don't really see any power loss either unless your pipe is constantly getting hit with snow. With that said the coater here is first coating the pipe with the best high temp black powder coat he can then going back over it with a gloss black. The pipes look real sharp. Its going on a boosted sled this season so I cant say how well it holds up but it sure does look good.... Just get on ebay and buy the set of mod factory pipes that are on there right now... Now were talking :)

6th year on my mat black ceramic stock DOO pipe. My Hot Doger is mounted directly on the pipe and barely gets hot enough to cook--so it is only able to heat up food--To make sure my pipe makes the best heat I also cut my alum shield so that it covers only the the fat part of the pipe directly behind the nose opening.

Applied Plastic Coatings--303-424-9200--does motorcycles, sleds, race cars, etc and recommends the mat finish. They offered to redo my pipe last year for materials cost only because the scratches were beginning to rust. They willl also do the interior of the pipe provided you do the cleaning.
