Swan Lake last Saturday. Notice VW sized boulder. That broke from the cornice above and the whole face was slid down to dirt about 100 yards across. Lucky for us it happened well before we showed up.

Warm weather, Hi Avy Danger...Hmmm
Looks like all I have to do is make it to Hood Hill Saturday for beers and have my son drive us home...:)

Saw some stuff like that at Harts Pass 10 days ago as well.

Be carefull folks with the rain we have had the last few days and the hot sun makes for a potenial danger almost every where unfortunitly. The whole mountain could come down at Baker. Think about it, if a slide started at Big house or Baker pas the runout could go all the way to Peanut, the Horse Coral or all of the runouts below Big House.

Just food for thought. I was planning on going to Baker, but not now. There other places to ride in the sun and be safe...............

I was planning to ride on friday afternoon. However after reading that I think its time to get the boat and the new standup jetski out. That will be almost like riding powder anyway

New report from today, Baker has a lot of cornices, be safe folks live to ride another day. We still have at least a month left.

...AVALANCHE WARNING THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...

A cool snowy winter and early spring in the Olympics and
Cascades has caused a deep snowpack and some record snow
depths in some areas. There have been fewer than usual and
only brief warm periods so far this spring. This has caused
the snowpack thus far to remain generally stable with few
avalanches reported. Rainy weather this past Tuesday and
Wednesday added one to over two inches of rain to the snowpack
at some sites causing increasing wet and unstable snow.

A major change in the weather pattern is underway over the
Northwest Thursday and should persist through this weekend. A
strong ridge of high pressure and warm air mass is moving over
the region. This is causing sunny hot weather beginning
Thursday and continuing through the weekend. Freezing levels
have risen to near or over 15,000 feet over much of the
Northwest as of early Thursday and stay nearly that high
through the weekend.

This upcoming hot weather is expected to cause a widespread
spring avalanche cycle in most areas starting later Thursday.
The relatively prolonged hot weather should melt and weaken
significant near surface snow and allow melt water to possibly
percolate to deeper older weak layers. This is most likely on
slopes facing the sun but should also be likely on any steep
aspects. Deep avalanches are possible. Some slides may release
to or near the ground, involving the entire winter’s snowpack.
The expected large wet snow avalanches may travel very fast
and run long distances, possibly to lower elevations where
little or no snow cover may remain or to valley floors.

We do not recommend back country travel near any avalanche
terrain Thursday and Friday and possibly through the weekend.
Initially small wet loose avalanches may trigger large and
deeper wet loose or wet slab avalanches. Back country
travelers should also avoid slopes below cornices or gullies
and flat areas below avalanche run out zones. A lack of
refreezing at night may contribute to the avalanche cycle.
Remember that boot or ski penetration of more than a few
inches can indicate snow is becoming significantly unstable on
steep slopes.
