Help with a dirty ignition droping problem

Good morning, I got the old 01 out yesterday and had a great time riding, the time before i went out on the ride back it droped out ignition on me just like you hit the kill switch well on the throttle, not a plesant thing to happen when your hitting some rutty terrain, It was on the way back to the truck so i kept going, it proceded to get worse on the way back but made it there. I had also noticed this a few times before the first run of the year that the sled would idle as it was warming up and then just crap out. Always restarts , I should mention that it would do the same on the trail, dies for about a second or two ...enough to slow down but then kicks back on and away yea go. Well i cam home and wiggled everything, unpluged my handle bar harness checked plugs and looked for loose wires or chafing. Everything loked good, I did have a really wet lanyard plug (dess Is it?), so i dryed it off and tryed that , seemed good so up the hill we went. It ran great for about three miles, I should note that the snow was ****y and the machines where running hotish, i could touch the cyclinder head with me hand so i would guess 120-140? I again looked for wires and checked the lanyard plug again , no dice . So my question is does this sound familyar and what can i do to figure this short of replacing the stator and the Mepp box(cdi) ? My machine is a 01 800 summit x with mechanical reverse. What machines can i swap from as i know where there is a 01 700 ? If i have to buy new i would like to change to push button reverse. As ususal guys thanx for helpin out.
I am on the Vancouver island In B.C.
