I just bought a 06 summit x 159. I love it. It was geared way down I believe. Top speed is 70. I also dissinegrated a belt today. I put the new one on and it seems to engage at about 4500. The secondary is set on 5. I want to still have the sled climb like it does but it is geared so low that I am only getting 50 miles on a tank of gas. Also seems like the clutch needs to b agjusted. When i go from reverse to forward the sled wants to move, but when you rev it up, it wont engage till 4500. Please help. I am new to skidoo. Oh also I am riding at 3000-6000 ft.
Welcome to the Doo club!
You say the secondary is set on 5, that's actually just a belt height adjustment With a brand new belt it should be on set on 3. You want the top of the belt to ride about 1/8" above the sheaves. Too high or low and you will either not get full shift out (or top speed) or wear out and blow belts.
Stop by a doo dealer and order an owner's manual. It's full of all kinds of useful info like this.
I'd start the gearing question by tilting the sled into it's left side, put the bar in a stand so the chain case is almost level and pull the chain case cover off. Check what gears it has in it. Just count teeth if you can't find the numbers in the gears. I'm not too sure about the 06, but my 07 159 had 19 tooth on top and 45 on the bottom. You should be just about the same. It's ok to add a tooth or two to the bottom at high altitude over 10,000K but you should be close to 19/45 at your elevation. Top speed on a stand should be about 85mph or better with stock gearing.
Doo's are usually great on gas, I'm wondering if your sled didn't come from sea level and could stand to be jetted down for 3-6k altitiude.
Unless your're pretty familiar with it, I'd bring it in to a doo shop and have them check the exhaust valves for proper operation, also have them check the jetting and see what their recommendations are for you location.
The engagement is stock at 4300-4500. The only way to get it lower is to install a spring in the primary with a lower starting force. It's personal preference mostly. I like 3800 for the trees.
Clickers on the primary should be set so when you are climbing you get and hold optimum RPM, 7850 on the P-tec maybe. It's in the manual and maybe on the clutch cover.
Try these suggestions and see if it helps. If all else fails, post it on Dootalk.com and see if any of the mod masters have some additional help.
Enjoy the new ride.
