Help. Using to much oil. Lots of smoke

Just got my 08 summit out of the shop. Took it in cuz throttle was sticking and lots of smoke. Dealer said need new throttle cable, so just had that done. Sled is still using too much oil, almost twice as much as normal. Plus there seems to be a lot more smoke. The dealer is now telling me they think it might be the oil pump. Will you guys tell me what you think?? Thanks

Plausable, i have experienced this in the past. I had a 08 gade that was using excessive amounts of oil. chased my tail on it for a while, new throttle cable, quadrupale checked oil pump cable adjustment, scratched my head a little, changed the pump and it fixed it. still not sure why, doesn't make much since, but it fixed it.

You have to lift the motor to get to the oil pump and change the cable, and it is possible the mounting arm for the cable was bent in the process, it my just be a fail safe in the pump, so that if the pump chit's itself it over oils instead of under and blowing up the motor. All I know for sure is the new pump fixed the problem.

Dont feel bad about having the cable changed, the are known for fraying and being an 08 I am sure it needed it, just too bad they didnt catch it while they were there and had it apart. That would be a tough one to catch tho as BRP teaches there tech's that oil pumps rarely fails. So an oil pump would be one of the last things they look at.

thanks for your input i really appricate it. i think you are right about the throttle cable i am 99.9% sure it needed to be replaced anyways. my ski doo techs were telling me they have a way to test the oil pump to see if it is not working properly. more bummed about having my sled back in the shop as we just got 4ft of fresh with more to come!! now i have to go back to my 07 REV because for some reason that PTEC 800R always runs.

Same issue here on my 09. Cable was frayed I replaced it. I did it myself but it used so much oil. I think the adjustment is off and im not sure how to check it.

Remove the panal on the chaincase side, remove the muffler, there is a plastic part that covers some hoses and cable;s, remove, oil pump cable runs though some wire loop, remove wire loom from oil pump cable. you will see a gold fitting in the cable, pull cable shething, there should be 18.5 mm of cable showing between the gold part and the shething. skidoo makes a tool to check this with.

Oh, and you have to take the slack out of the flipper by sliding somthing between the flipper and the housing, I made a tapered tool out of a 16 penny nail, lol
