Can you help us with a snowmobile specific research initiative?

In collaboration with the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC), a research team at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver is currently conducting an online survey on mountain snowmobiling and avalanche awareness.
The goal of the research team is to gather information on how mountain riders perceive avalanche hazard and how we decide where to ride.

:face-icon-small-hap The results of this study will lead to tools and services that better support our sled community. :face-icon-small-hap

While there are occasional references to the Canadian Avalanche Centre, this survey is geared to mountain snowmobilers in general and riders from other countries can simply substitute in their local forecast organizations as appropriate.

Simply click on ‘Create personal survey account’ to start.

As a token of appreciation, participants who complete the survey before May 30 will be entered in a draw for one of five two-night stays at a popular BC snowmobile destination. Curious about which towns/hotels were selected?

Thanks for your ongoing support of avy safety! We are making a difference!!

I just finished it. I did not like the picture options as you couldn't pick a fraction of a day out of the 3 images. I found the survey quite frustrating overall due to the image choices.

I feel your pain! :face-icon-small-con A single picture is always tough to work with. The pictures are randomly selected for each participant, so you may have had different images than other people. Sorry for your bad experience.

Hopefully most of the pictures have a general theme to them. Don't get hung up on specific small features or distant slopes. It is likely the main foreground that the survey is intending you to consider.

Thanks again to everyone...there have been over 300 completed surveys since Monday! Great start!

Just finished the survey. It was pretty painless. The one thing I would have like to have seen is a subjective overall score to my general knowlege of avalanche danger.

Good comment. It feels more like a test than a survey in that one section. It really isn't meant to be a test....it should really be seen as a 'how do we actually make decisions', not 'how SHOULD we make decisions'. The idea is to create tools that work with how we operate on a regular basis.

That said, if you are interested to run through a few mini-quizzes with answers that pop up we have an online training series that you can check out. Free.
