Help Pls, Water Temp gauge Install Question

Picked up a Koso Dual EGT/Water temp/tach gauge to install on a 2002 800 RMK. Instructions are pretty vague on the water temp hook-up

Its your standard 2-wire, pos & ground. It also can be plugged into a new temp probe sensor that comes with the kit.

My question is, can I splice it into the stock WTS wiring so that the sled still controls the idiot light and limp mode, and the guage displays the actual temp?

The sensor on the head right in front of the thermostat is the WTS correct?

Thanks in advance!

I just hooked up a Digitron guage with water temp display on my 2004 RMK. Was able to find a 1/2"x1/4" or 3/8" (don't remember) brass fitting at the local hardware store that allowed me to reuse the stock opening in the cylinder head. I simply removed the factory sensor and screwed in the new brass fitting and attached my sensor lead. You have to get a temperature sensor bypass plug from SLP and plug it into your stock temperature sensor lead. This will disable your ignition retard mode but who cares. You now can see the actual temp before it becomes a problem. By some scratchers and your over heat problems are done. If I start to see temps approaching 170 degrees, I stop and put down the scratchers. It will run 120 degrees the all day long. Should have bought some of those years ago. Would have saved at least one rebuild.

Yep, talked to slp about the by-pass and they ended up being out of that part....but highly rec'd the "T" water hose adapter.

Guess I will go that route on the temp gauge, thanks

Whats the best way to drain the anti-freeze and replace without air bubbles staying in there?

Pull lower hose on motor let drain then when you add water raise the front up a little . There should be a bleeder screw on thee top of the t-stat housing crack it open and run the motor and fill till it quits burping .

Man youve never seen a grown man get as frustrated as I was trying to open that dam bleeder screw on the T-stat housing. That sum'biotch aint budging lol....and there isnt much recognizable of it anymore anyway. I can tell you it definately wont turn with my screwdriver, a wrench, or 2 different sizes of vice grips. :mad2::face-icon-small-ton.

Tonight after work that stupid screw is going down

Rec Supply in Saskatoon in Canada carries SLP, I bought that bypass switch this past January from them, $12 CDN. Shipping was expensive though 20$ to Alberta.

Thanks everyone, she's all hooked up and rdy to go for the weekend.

I installed the SLP 'T" into the coolant hose, and left my stock temp sensor in place for now. I will probably pick up one of those by-pass wires just to have in my pocket if you know what I mean.

Excited to see what my EGT's are running. Have the jetting dialed in so sweet with nice piston wash and cardbord plugs, already. Curious to see what temps Im at on the long pulls up here.

Every so often i ride somewhere new with a diff elevation range and it will help see right away if I need to swap jets.

Appreciate all the tips :high5:

Guys give me your opinions on something here.

I finished the install of my Koso's with dual egt's and went riding this weekend for 2 days. Saturday was pushing them hard, as we had a foot of new fairly dense pow overnight. Sunday was more set up.

Sled is new to me (bought used) and did not have gauges on it. I hate not knowing so I added them myself.

About 4 weeks ago I rode the first time for 2 days (no gauges other than tach) and when I checked the plugs and wash it looked absolutely beautifull.

This weekend i ride the same area with guages, temps slightly lower but in correct range. Have both egts at exactly 6" from skirt on each of the CPI pipes, and set the alarm flash for 1300 deg.

Well long story short I flashed all day long and hit over 1500 degrees several times. i could let off and drop right back to 1100, at cruising speed (1/3 throttle or so) she would try to really go up 1400+, and at "wot" it seemed to be right around 1300 or less even 1250. Scared the beegeezus outta me and i babied it around more than I usually would wondering if im off a jet size compared to where the PO had tuned it in.

Well i check the wash again, and it looks beautifull still after 2 tanks of gas and a bunch of Wide-open-ness on the throttle.

What should I think? Its an 01 800 RMk, with a VES topend and nothing else stock but the bulkhead. :noidea:
I think the carbs are from the 01 originally but have been bored and polished...but the 01's did have that lean spot in the midrange with its needle or so ive heard.......

oh yeah, at the truck it was really spiking the egt temps, and as I got up higher they seemed to creep down...but still I bet I coulda went 10 miles or more at over 1400-1450 deg while cruising up to the base of the mtn to start the real riding.

Not to mention Ive rode alot of RMK's in my day....and ive never seen anything like this one. I was out with a 01 RMK and it had no problem keeping up with the way newer M8 and Ski-doo i was with. The only real difference was they had a little more track than my 159, but this RMK def has as much power or more - or puts it to the ground more.

water temp gauge install

Hi,

Thinking about the water temp gauge on my 04 800, the one that would splice in the water line. The coolant circulation path is not clear to me - which line is recommended for installing the splice? Do you happen to know the hose diameter (to ensure I get the correct splice fitting)?

Thanks!

If you our getting high readings on your egts and the wash is good. I would bet that you our getting a flash burn in the pipe and that is what making it seem hot. If you have the VES top end did you change the needle in your carbs? if you did not get a 04 rmk needle, i haver found that that one works the best. not too rich or to lean.

You need to check your wash at the throttle position where it is running hot - not at full throttle. It could be caused by being rich as clutchman pointed out and burning fuel in the pipe but it could also be caused by a lean condition because of the needle or clip position. Before changing the needle you have to find out which one it is. Do your wash test the same as you would at full throttle. Just make sure to run it long enough at that throttle position to get a good indication.

Trail Tech sells a digital temperature guage with a m6 screw sensor. Could a person put that into the thermostat housing in place of the bleed screw? Or drill and tap another hole in the side to get a good temperature reading?
