help please

Ok guys Ive decided to pick up a newer sled soon, and would like some help pickin one out. To start off Im kinda a speed freak so top end speed is very important. But I live in central Iowa and we dont get a ton of snow or have many groomed trails so most of our riding is in the ditches and on the rivers. I am looking at a 03 800REV, a 05 fusion 900, a 03 RX1, a 02-03 800 edge X, and an 03 F7 efi snopro. Do any of you have any of these and if you do could you tell me how they handle ditch riding or what to expect to get out of it on the top end. Or is there anything to watch out for in any of these sleds. Ive got a bad back so wont be doing any snoX type jumping but like to get a little air under the track from time to time. Any help would be really appreciated thanks in advance.

Well they are all decent machines. I'd take them each for a ride and see what you think. They are all different from each other, with their own handling characteristics. None of them are slow. I have ownership experiences with Polaris and Cat. Not necessarily in any order: 1.) The F7. I have seen them spank the others on that list, when properly setup. I have a friend that still runs one (slightly tweaked) that is faster than his stock 800 XP. and they have a great chassis. 2.) The Edge X 800 is also a very nice machine, just be sure to check the crank runout before you touch it, then make sure it has the stainless exhaust valves as the stockers melted or cracked off, been there.

I don't have much experience with the rest, but 3.) the RX1 is reliable but very heavy, however it has very long legs on the ice. The weight would keep me away from it though. 4.) The 900 Fusion didn't last long and didn't have a very good reputation (paint can shaker), there may be some who would beg to differ, but I doubt it. 5.) *** The 800 Rev is also a good top choice, but I honestly do not know that much about it. I'll defer to the SkiDoo guys...

I'll go back to my 1st comment, ride them and see what fits you...and go over the sled and make sure that there's life left in it. jmho :beer;
 
help

if you are at all considering a 4 stroke. go with a apex or attak. i have an 06 attak and love it for ditch banging. get the rear shock valved or go with a remote reservoir and fly. the power and traction of the attak more than makes up for the weight. i rode an 03 rx-1 that a guy my nephew knows bought and it was quite frankly scarey. it had the finger track and the rear wanted to pass the front end under braking. ride one if you ever get the chance, it is definately a different ride to get used to. good in your decision
 
What was bad about the fusion 900's? I havent heard much about any of the sleds im looking at and chances of taking one for a test drive this time of year is pretty slim.

Whats the best way to tell if they have much life left in them, just a compression check, if so what is acceptable? Most of the sleds Ive looked at seem to have 2500-3500miles some a bit more.

Weight doesnt really bother me right now im riding a yamaha vmax4 and am actually kinda fond of the extra front end weight, when I ride my buddies XCR600 it seems to light in the front almost to the point of being floaty and hard to turn. Like I said Im not looking for a snowcross'r just want the fastest sled I can get and have a good enough suspension to handle some small jumps when they come along

Ya the F7 is a tough sled to beat if its set up right, Ive seen my buddies run circles around another buddies ZR900 but like I said before I like to go fast and just wanna get the most bang for my buck and not beat my back up too bad, again thanks for taking the time to help out

Ya I ran across that post, man you guys have me half scared to buy another sled now. Ive read a bunch of post in the skidoo forum and the polaris forum about problems with the 800s not lasting long and the fusion 900 sounds like a money pitt. Starting to lean towards the F7 and the RX1 now. Is there anyway to make the F7 run with the RX1? I run a lot of frozen rivers and big open ditches and feilds an d im not a little guy so I need a sled that haul my big butt around and keep up with my little buddies. With the type of riding we do, ditches, feilds, and rivers its a lot of wide open riding with the occassional stop here n there to play n hit some small jumps

Anyone know what a 2003 RX1 weighs, would it be comparable to a vmax4 800, 4cylinder 800cc two stroke

I wouldn't go with the RX1(-ton).

The 900s aren't as bad as they're made out to be. I love mine.

Just about any recent mountain machine has its problems, but they're all loaded with power.

"Concubines" is a fun word to say.

Sorry, but I have to disagree about weight making it easier to turn. That just isn't valid. Today's sleds are lighter than ever and corner better than ever. If that Vmax 4 will corner with that XCR (I assume it's the tripple/single pipe and not the heavy tripple/tripple pipe), the XCR had some chassis setup issues, blown shocks, rear scissor stops removed, front limiter all the way out, etc. That XCR should corner like a slot car. I disagree that weight is your friend unless you have a lake racer geared to the moon that runs over a buck twenty (on the gun). If you spend most of your time going straght and railing corners isn't a concern, then I'd look into some used T-Cats...they have piles of motor and can be geared up a little and give you unreal top end. The suspension with ETT is o.k. not great. The sleds have pretty solid reliability as well. Also, yes compression check is a good start, but each model had it's own issues that need to be checked out. When you have a sled picked out post what it is and people will chime in on what to look for...not trying to be argumentative...just my opinion...:beer;
