Help!! M1000 spark issues

Hey guys went out and rode my sled the other day and it ran good for a little while (the bog I had was almost gone) and then it just quit like I hit the kill switch. Now it is being wierd it isnt getting any spark most of the time but every now and then it will get spark and will start but it will only run for about ten seconds and it dies. So the spark is coming and going! But when it does get the spark it is very weak. I have tried putting in a new stator, ecu, chasis control, spark plugs, the two small black timing units that go near the stator and nothing has fixed the issue. I have a hard time beleiving that all for coils could all go out at the same time! Is there anything I should check that Im not thinking of please any help would be very appriciated.

Thanks in advance guys

check ground wire on top bolt right side of stering post mount. you cant see it you can feal under hose the mounting bolt has a nut on the end of it that holdes the ground wire for the eletronics

I cant seem to find this bolt/ground can you be more specific please?
I have the sled pretty tore apart gas tank is off so i could get to the coils behind the motor. But I dont see this ground bolt that your talking about

Under the coolant bottle...where the steering post bolts to the bulk yeah
there is two bolts per side and on the top bolt of those bolts
is or should be a ground wire
like he said you reach in and feel it but you can't see it

I actually had the same problem today with similar symptoms accept the the plugs on the mag side were nice choclate brown and both pto side plugs looked both fouled. I was planning on changing plug wires and boots first. It seemed liked I was on one cyl only for most of the day but after a break it would run great for about 5min then same thing piss me off :mad: I ride an 09 M1000 but still kicked buddies *** if he's readin this :D:beer;

I looked everywhere and felt everywhere and I didnt find a ground! I took my coils off and tested them and three of the four were bad according to the test. So i have those on order but im still curious about this ground? Does anyone know for sure that this ground is on the 2007 m1000 models?

I have been fighting a similar issue. I thought I was over oiling or something so I went to a 40:1 premix BDX oil elimination. First time out on it today and fouled a set of plugs again. Only died once on me today, but was running like sh*t on the way back to the truck after like 3 hours out. I have full SLP exhaust and Timbersled Intakes and am basically down to stock fuel settings so I know I am not running to rich. Has me a little baffled. My plugs are all like a dry fouled look. Not wet just dark and dry? Baffled..........

huh, that toataly sucks you should be testing that other helix, not fighting w/engine problems:face-icon-small-fro

What test do you perform for checking the coils? Is there a procedure...

I took the coils down to my dealer and they checked them for me. Im not sure what the thing was called that they used sorry.

Has anyone else ever had to replace these coils? Im curious if these bad coils were the thing that was causing my sled to have the bog it had and running bad. Im thinking if maybe only a couple were working ok and two were bad it would explain why it was running so rich only having half its spark. Does this seem likely to you guys?

Last season a guy on here had to replace all four, they all tested bad. If you ever take your spark plugs out do not turn the motor over without having them in the plug wire boot and properly grounded. Not sure what it does but would assume it over charges the coil and wipes it out.
Check the plug wires for rubbing through on the head. Check the end cap is on tight( it just screws on righty tighty.

Seems like we had spark leave once and then come back randomly and it was the bd box wires rubbing on the plate above the throttle bodies(cant remember what it caused )

This is the same thing my sled was doing just before the coils quit on me!

Do you remeber what this guys sled did before it quit? Did it run good and all for just quit at the same time? Did it run rough before it finally quit? Did it ever actually quit running?

Did anyone figure this out?
My 07 M1000 is doing the same thing, 1800miles. Really annoying, we had to tow it out this weekend. Grrrrrrrr
It runs great, then it just dies. Won't start, no spark. Then all of a sudden it just starts right up again, usually after an hour or so.

I have replaced;
Throttle safety switch
Handlebar wiring harness
Kill switch
Tried different ECU

Any ideas. Stator, coils, or wiring harness?

That sounds like the stators ignition coils are starting to fail to me! but I first tested the ecu, ccu, stator,spark timming relays with no fix then I pulled the coils out and had them tested and three of four tested bad. I replaced them with four new ones and sled still had no spark! Then i tested everything again and everything was still working so I replaced the wiring harness. the sled started right up with the new harness! then about 20 miles after all that the spark timers quit. Replaced them and now the sleds running great have about a 150 miles on it.

So good luck no idea what you could be up against but i really hope you better luck then I had.

The sled i referred to was going down the trail and just quit, then it would go, then sometimes after you sit it wouldn't start. It had a bd box on it and with the extra wire and plugs it started rubbing on the heat shield. I just happen to start looking once when it quite and found it in a few minutes and never had a problem again. I think he said it bogged a few times and had a confused look on his face but not sure its been a while since.

Had budies 08 1000 do the same thing,loaded up and stopped on a face..put him over the bars ..any way the sled fired up and ran really rough,would not move then die..we popped the plugins off the ecu and pulled it over 3to4 times plugged it back in ,the first pull it ran rough again and died,second pull it flashed right up and has been ripping ever since..almost like it reflashed itself..

My M1000 just did this today, was riding and bottom end felt really bogged down. Kept riding and 2 hours later it felt like it loaded up and just quit. Will tear into the wiring tomorrow. Is there a home test that can be done with an ohm meter to test the coils?
