HELP!!! Lights burn out.

I have a 1990 yamaha exciter that keeps burning out headlights (They last about 30 seconds). I put a new voltage regulator on it like everyone said and that didnt work. What else can I check or replace?

Check voltage. but don't surprised if a DC volt meter shows zero volts. My sled actually has AC..but not the same AC as a house....anyway I digress...make sure you did not cook your new voltage regulator because of a short. My ultra was famous for this. Look for shorts anywhere you have a wire tie. Some people really put the sqeezerabi on them and they rub through and contact metal. Famous places for shorts are on the handle bars and grip warmer elements and under the seat.

I chected the volatge with DC and it was 14 at idle and jumped to around 50 and half throttle. I'll try testing it on AC and see what I get. Cant seem to find any short and I cleaned up the ground. Dont know much about sleds though. Thanks for the input.

if you are getting voltage on the dc scale you have a rectifier and a regulator. did you replace the rectifier instead of the regulator? 50 volt spikes has gotta be the reg.

Bridge rectifier maybe?

Diode array?

AC off stator goes through a rectifier to flip one side of the AC wave to the other. Run that through a capacitor to get rough DC. Run that rough DC through a regulator got get solid clean DC.

Unless your sled's AC, then you won't have any of that.
