help in removing a circlip

K

knee deep in it

Well-known member
I am changing a track and part of the process is to remove the drive shaft. I am trying to remove the circlip that holds in the drive shaft seal in the chaincase.

I have been very successful in using my tool to squeeze the ends together, then they just snap back. This is a lot of fun but, eventually I will bore of this and actually want to remove the frickin circlip.

I have noticed that the tips of my tool are very small compared to the opening in the circlip ends. Is this the problem? How to you get the squeezed together ends to come out of thier groove nad out of the chaincase?

Any help would be greatly appreciated by the neighbors whose young children are learning some bad words today.

If you can squeeze the ends together, try to get a small blade screwdriver in beside the clip and the case. Then you can pry it out. Larger tips on the snap ring pliers make it a lot easier also.

You should have a interchangeable tip circlip tool. If not next chance you get I would get one. I like my heavy duty snap on ones. They don't usually let the circlip snap out of your tips like yours is doing.

Why not pull the case off and leave the bearing and seal in place inside the case? I have always done this on my Polaris and Ski-Doo stuff a few years back. The shaft should slide out of the bearing by removing the entire chain case. No need for snap ring stuff then.

Try angling the ends of the tool outward from where the tool goes into the holes.

Just a bit, not too much bend the ends slightly outward so the tips tend to want to go past the holes........

Your welcome;)
