Help, getting bearing off the gears in diamond drive

Hi all,

I'm at our camp changing the gears in my M8. Have the drive out and apart but the bearings don't want to come off. Any special tricks or tools I must have here or just try harder? I cannot believe many pullers could even get behind these even if I had one here.

i tried to get mine off to use on my new gears. Even brought them to a machine shop and they told me they would destroy them getting them off. I ended up ordering all new bearings and just left the other ones on the stock gears.
 
I have not tried this but on bearings on small engines I have boil water and dipped the bearing in after the part was in the freezer. IT will expand enough to slide off with your hands.

Now as for putting them on this way I am not sure about water in the bearing.

Just went through the same problem yesterday. I changed gears in my M1 and I ended up buying new bearings. I do not think there is any way to get those bearings off without wrecking them. I tried heat and that did not do anything. After I stuck a screw driver through my hand, I realized they were not coming off. I would save yourself the headache and just order new bearings they are cheap. Good luck.
 
i got mine off with 2 screw drivers /shrug , just pryed em off

that little one on top of the secondary side i use a small puller
 
Would it not make more sense to just buy new bearings for the new gears? Then you have a spare set in case something happens to them. And the idea of old removed bearings would always worry me. Even with only a few hundred miles on them! They could be tweeked just enough!!
 
the bearings are very cheap, go to napa a get a better quality bearing then the POS cat puts in it.....use a puller or whatever to get em off, then tap a new one on:beer;

Or the proper width chisel

Gear in vise , couple pieces of thin wood or so to protect gear

Hammer and the proper width chisel - Work the chisel behind the bearing a little at a time in different places - The angled end of COLD CHISEL will drive the bearing from gear - Honestly so simple , its sad

And you will not destroy the bearings - And the sharp edge of chisel never touches the gear or bearing

Done this so many times , effortless - If there really stuck , two chisels , one to keep pressure on the opposite side

Heat 'em in the oven to put 'em back on (max 200 F), or freeze the shafts. Either way works good.
 
Maybe not destroy, but any side force between the ball and the race on a deep groove ball bearing will drastically shorten it's life. That's why they should be installed by pushing on the inner race only....no side force exerted to the ball assembly.

And without the PROPER Bearing Puller that is two piece and actually slides under the bearing between the gear

Secure the gear in a vice, take a flathead screwdriver and tap under and around the gear carefully till it slightly lifts (just enough for a puller to grab) . Then take your bearing puller and pop it off. After you take the bearing off test it to make sure it's not catching. If so blow out and apply oil and if still catching just buy a new bearing, they are cheap..
 
I ended up posting this and then just tried a little harder. I carefully tapped a screwdriver around on all sides and they started moving right away. The little one on the top of the secondary side I just used a small 2 jaw puller. I never had to use much force and everything felt fine spinning them around.

I officially HATE my "local" dealer up there. I called them Saturday morning and asked if I brought the gears if they could pop them off. The guy wanted to know what year machine what parts I was changing etc etc.... I told him going to 57/63 to 55/65. He started telling me how you can't do that. Then I told him that is what '10s have. Then he starts with how they have more hp to turn that gear and it won't work on a '08 because it doesn't have the horsepower or clutching the '10 has. I kindly told him that i'm gearing DOWN (not up) so if anything it takes less horsepower to turn them. Anyways he then proceeds to tell me how they have special tools and it's almost impossible to get the bearings off and he cannot do it until Monday (I had told him I was only there for the weekend already). What's funny is i'd be willing to bet that guy sat in there most of the day and never had anyone in there. Oh well I got it done without him and that was mark 3 against them. They have never been helpful, had what I needed, and always have had an attitude and talk down to you like you are the dumbest person on earth. I will only give them business under duress. Flip side I had stopped at a dealer in Wisconsin driving up right off the highway on Friday to buy coolant (did the '09 rear bumper/tunnel conversion) and they were nice, friendly, helpful. Second time I have been there and the same result both times. I will plan to stop there whenever I need stuff that I don't order.

Don't you just love those dealers that talk in circles! They do not have a clue what they are doing and should find something else to do with their lives! After reading what you wrote I thought of a local dealer here and had to laugh! They lost my business because they did not know theirs! lol thanks man!
 
When guys change gears do you have to redo your clutching? Or will it just rev up faster? and then hold the same RPM?

if you are going to go with new bearings to make things easier for gear change how many bearings are needed? I have two sets of gears and will be going back and forth what is needed to make this easy... don't want to screw around with pulling bearings.
