Help a newbie out please

Been browsing this site and just joined. I recently moved from So Calif to Herriman, Utah (Salt Lake area). I would consider myself a good, intermediate rider. Enjoy carving, sidehilling, hills (no steep, chutes, etc), some trees, alpine meadows. Have some experience riding in the mountain west (a little in Island Park/Yellowstone, Brianhead in So Utah, and once in Fairview area). Where would you suggest for the best locations for my type of riding locally (maybe 2 hrs from SLC)as well as locations within a days drive(10 hrs or less).
Please be as specific as possible. Thanks for all the input. Map is out and ready for your replies!:)

Big Sky/West area

im right around your riding level, and i love some of the places around big sky and west jellystone. for example, buck ridge, taylors fork, teepee creek, and portal creek. These places dont require any really scary climbs or chutes, except portal. lots of open meadows and some fun highmark area. we have driven big sky to downtown salt lake in around 8 hours with sleds. i highly recommend coming up, and if you do, send me a pm. id be more than happy to show you around the area.
cheers
chris

I PM'd ya ho.

Thanks for the info. I have never been to that part of Yellowstone, more on the IP side. If you stay in Yellowstone, how far are these areas - Bucks, Taylor, Teepee to ride to or should you trailer?

time from west

If you are staying in west, you can ride right to teepee. i dont know exactly how far it is from down town, but it if you were riding directly from town, it wouldnt be a bad idea to pack gas, as teepee can be a long ride. Taylors fork, buck ridge, and carrot basin are much closer to big sky. You need to trailer to them, but buck and taylors can be a much shorter ride if you dont feel like going out all day. if you have any questions when you come out, just pm me.
hope you make it out
chris

You don't have to go out of state!

Utah has some of the best riding in the west, and your only an hour or two away from some awesome riding. Go up Provo canyon to Heber, from there go left to Woodland to ride the Wolf Creek/ Mill Hollow area, or go right to go to Strawberry/Whiteriver area, or go up Lake Creek in the middle of Heber to access the middle of both areas. Go south to Fairview/Schofield area for some awesome riding also, its only a little farther away.I've been riding for over thirty years, been to West Yellowstone, rode the continental divide trail out of Jackson, they are great areas but they've got nothing on us. Utah has some excellent riding areas you just have to find them.

Utah has some great spots, I have a buddy in Herriman we are riding tomorrow if we can make both schedules work. He is a little more intense than I am but if he is cool with it we'll take ya along.

Utah guys intense? :D Thanks for the offer. I will not be riding for a couple weeks at best - new job, family, etc but trying to get enough info to make some plans for when I can get out locally as well as some road trips in February. As things settle down, I would really like to hook up with some locals that have the same/similar riding styles/desires that I do. I've read some of your guys posts and some of ya'all are frickin crazy!!:beer;:). Thanks for so many replies and PM's, all are appreciated, keep the info coming. I learn more and more from each person. Have a safe and happy New Year.

If your willing to drive up to 10 hours from the Salt Lake area, you can just about hit every major riding area in the west. I rode with a friend in Logan last year. I believe it was Cub River, just across into Idaho. They said the snow conditions were not very good for that time but I thought it was great. We were able to get to places that my buddie said he had never been before.

It sounds like you enjoy the same type of riding and terrain that I do. The Utah guys, while I have not met many of them personnaly, are great guys and will help you out in any way. A lot of them know these areas "intimately". I would be glad to ride with you. Up until a few months ago, I had a cabin in Island Park, so spent 90% of my time and riding up there. I really don't know my own "backyard" near as well as I should, so I will be spending a lot more time riding around here and finding these type of riding areas. PM me when you get some free time. I live in Murray, so not very far away from you.
