Help? '09 M8 towed out and now new noises...

Thanks in advance to anybody who can shed some light on this :)

My boyfriend's '09 M8's recoil starter "blew up" literally when we were out this weekend :( it was dark and late and pieces were everywhere, so rather that start it with the clutch we just towed it back down with my sled (maybe a mile or so) The next day no one local had the parts so we took out the internal components of the recoil starter and replaced the cover. We then manually started it with the clutch for the day.

About 3/4 through the day, it started making some interesting noises on the same side... It actually sounds as if its below the engine closer to the track? It started to get worse as day progressed... it's definitely not the engine and only makes it when moving forward... not at idle or when in reverse. We also checked to see if anything was stuck in track... nope...more of a metallic sound anyway...kind of grinds... sorry hard to describe...as if you had a sore throat and trying to clear it, lol.

He had to work today and hasn't had a chance to research it yet, but I love this forum and thought I would get a head start by asking the question.

Thanks again :)

I know it's not on the mag side but a metallic grinding in one direction and only when the sled is moving sounds a lot like the diamond drive.

Thanks for the reply. That was my thought too initially... so I told him to put it in reverse and no noise which I assumed confirmed my theory. I thought maybe it was damaged when I was towing it? but the noise it so strange as it is definitely coming from the right side, just below the brake and recoil area...? This really has me stumped :face-icon-small-dis

Well, when he gets home from work, we'll start tearing her apart I guess...

I welcome any and all suggestions :face-icon-small-hap

Diamond garbage

They should rename them Cubic Zirconia drives. Fake diamond POS junk! My 09 HCR let me down this weekend 1st day out. Long way in backcountry to tow out. Ruined a good day of riding. Only had 250 miles on it. Sounds like the exact same sounds/symptoms. Grinding, howling noise and all of a sudden pow....game over.

hey

Did you guys replace the bearing that goes bad. Mine came out in pieces at 400 miles. I can't remember exactly what bearing it is, but its junk for sure.

lol, I guess while I was replying to the other post you put this up... that is what the thread I mentioned was talking about. :face-icon-small-hap

Yea, we will be checking it out tonight, but it is still bugging me that the sound was coming from elsewhere. :face-icon-small-dis

Thanks for all the input, we REALLY appreciate it

well, guess we found out the problem... (see pic):face-icon-small-sho

anybody know the ramifications of having this bolt work it's way loose and out of the shaft? We found it wedged under the brake rotor.

hey

Is it a 16mm bolt? Its the bolt that holds the driveshaft together I believe, but my be wrong. Look down the shaft with a flashlight and see if its on there. The driveshaft shouldn't do much because of the bolts holding the diamond drive to bulkhead, but may make drivers move a little.

Yes, it's the 16mm bolt from the brake end of the shaft. We were hoping it didn't do much, like you suggested ... It would explain the different sounds as it worked it's way loose and out.

Just wanted to make sure nothing leaked from it being out. We are going to take the opportunity to do a quick fluid check on everything, just in case. Oh, and tighten all bolts too, lol.

yeah

Nothing will leak out from it coming out. My buddies came out, and then the piece on the end by the brake, and he rode 15 miles to the truck fine. His only problem was they bounced around the clutches for awhile before he noticed it.

Yea, looks like that's what happened here too. I don't think it needs a specific torque amount, so I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow (old one is chewed up) and cross our fingers that we're good. Looks like we dodged a "snowball" (vs. bullet) on this one, lol.

Thanks for helping a chick out :face-icon-small-hap I was glad to have information to give him when he came back from work all bummed out about his sled.
