Helmet Storage and Lighting ???

I have an enclosed trailer, and I want to store my helmets in there. Anyone have any recommendations for this? Obviously I don't want them bouncing around. What do you people do?
I also want to add some more 12 volt lights. Anyone have any luck with LED's?
I will need to consider current draw because there is a limit to what the lighting circuit can put out. :light:
Also have tossed around the idea of have a good battery in there just for this, but not sure if that's a good idea or not. :face-icon-small-dis
Also wouldn't mind some ideas on shelving. Gas and oil container storage?
Thanks in advance!

I used snow west member, Ski breeze's idea for my oil containers. Shelves from Home Depot. Works well.

$20 - ClosetMaid ShelfTrack 7 in. D x 8 in. H x 18 in. L Basket
$15 - ClosetMaid ShelfTrack 84 in. Standard Hanging Track

For lighting, the 2 stock 12V lights weren't that bright. I added a LED light in the front. I used a LED Flood Light Utility. Very bright white.. Lights up the whole trailer better. I need to add a little more light when I'm doing engine work though.
The light I used draws about 0.5 Amps.
Ordered from Cyclops Adventure. LED Flood Light

GOING TO ORDER TWO OF THOSE LIGHTS

Those are great ideas! Thank you. :cheer2:

Is that PVC pipe on the wall? Are you forcing air through it?
You just gave me an idea. I have plywood on the walls and floor. If I paint them white that should help also. What do you think? I just bought this trailer new a month ago. I am going to hang two spare tires up like the way you did with the one. The last trailer I had had two axles too and one time in Cooke City we got back to the parking lot (9 miles by sled) I had two flat tires. Lesson learned. Carry two spares. :face-icon-small-dis
One more question. Does anyone know of a great web site for JEEP?:face-icon-small-hap

You're welcome! I picked up those ideas from other members here, so thanks to all!
Yes, it's 4" PVC triplewall 2 hole. It's ducting coming off my furnace.
The white walls came stock in my trailer. I think if you painted your walls white, it should help reflect the light off better. Good idea.
Carry two spares.
Right on! Better safe then sorry, 2 for me as well.
I constructed the tire mounts with some steel that was sitting around, and welded some studs into it. Works very well!

I bought 2 strips of LED lighting off of ebay. Stuck them on the ceiling. Lit up the trailer really well.

If you plan to use the lights in the trailer a lot and have a way to supply power I'm a fan of 12v florescent I have 6, 2 footers in mine. With the lights and furnace going on a single 12 volt battery I can go 2 hrs depending how often the furnace is running. Any more then that and I plug into the generator or the hotel.

I haven't added any extra lights in mine, but I did add a deep cycle battery to run the lights when the trailer is disconnected or the truck ignition is off... VERY nice to have! Just tap into the charging circuit and you're good to go.

Yeah, I also used that wire racking from Home Depot. I used an 8' shelf and I turned the shelf upside down so that the lip is pointing up. That helps to hold the helmets in place. Then we just use the chin straps to hold the helmet in place. Works great. Also used the shelves that I believe were made for the inside door of a pantry. It was pretty tall so I cut in half and attached them side-by-side. The depth is enough to hold a gallon jug of oil along with several other cans, jars, etc.

I swapped out my lights for Rigid led lights. Battery lasts longer and light is much better.

Nice helmet setup monster715. The Home Depot shelving varieties are great! I put them up before this season. I should have done it a couple years ago.

Wow, you weren't exaggerating about Aluminum Cabinet company being pricey. Looks like very quality stuff though.

ndmtnsledder - I was thinking of adding some 12V fluorescent lights on my ceiling. I was looking at the Thin Lite 12v Fluorescent Light Fixtures. Look like good output and minimal current draw. Which ones did you use?

I have one bigger thinlight over my bench and then the other 5 are a bit shorter that I got from a seller called RandPCarriage on ebay both work great just thinlight is a bit more expensive. I've used that seller for a lot of stuff with great luck. I put some newer pcs up in the trailer tips thread that's stickied above.

No problem can do a copy of my recent post. You can see the lights in the last two pictures.

Thought I would add some pictures of what I've done to mine over the last year or so. I've added a suburban furnace enclosed it in aluminum sheeting and ran some PVC ductwork. I was able to figure out how to open up the front of the V inside and manged to squeeze a propane tank at the bottom and sealed from the electric area, then a battery shelf, and above that a RV style charger converter that runs my 12v and 110v systems and a battery meter gauge. I started to put a car style radio in but had a set of PC speakers sitting around and being i'm on 110 most of the time anyway I decided to use them with a cell phone or ipod for music which someone always has. For lighting I've added 6 florescent 12v lights. I took my cabinets out cause they were in the way some day I plan to cut them into shorter cabinet and re install one section in the back. I replaced all my exterior lights with LEDs and the backup lights are so bright I wired them up as loading lights you can switch on from inside the trailer. For a toolbox I use my Montezuma V style toolbox from my farm pickup a couple nuts unbolts it from the pickup and bolts it in the trailer. I had to cut out some of the lower bracing on the shelf and the toolbox is pretty heavy so I've added cables from the ceiling beams to the outside of the shelf with a couple thousand miles that way it seems to be doing the trick. I also added a 5ft section of shelving track in the V with different kinds of hooks to hold ext cord, spare parts, tie straps, coats ect. http://www.menards.com/main/storage-...58-c-12657.htm

I was also having a lot of trouble with mice which is what led me to all the open room in the front V other then some wires that made great ladders for the mice it was pretty open. I have a very fine meshed steel that the propane tank sits on but the mice can't get through and then I went around underneath all the wall cavities and sprayed and expandable foam that said its mouse proof. Since I've done that I have had a single sign of mice in the trailer.

Thanks for the pictures of the lights. Same locations I want to mount mine. I might center mine in the ceiling more though.

I'm still not sure if I will buy LED or Fluorescent. Do you have any problems with your fluorescent bulbs in cold weather at all? monster715-Looks like you use fluorescent also.

Thanks for the link to R&PCarriage. I was looking at some LED lights. Here's the specs.
23.8" Interior Surface Mount Interior Cargo Light
1,200 Lumens of Light Output
216 LEDs
23.8" L x 5.9" H x .9" D
12 Volts
1.32 Amp Draw

It's nice they only draw 1.32A and output 1.2K Lumens of light. Pretty efficient. It looks like the fluorescents draw little more.
Do you know what the specs on your lights are?

I came across these lights too. Would be nice to mount on the outside exterior for better night lighting when loading.
TWO Compact Cargo trailer Snowmobile 2"-10 watt LED Loading Driving /work Light!

Nice install. Good idea with the propane location and setup. I ended up finding a good price on a used ASME horizontal mount RV propane tank-mounted underneath the trailer. An interior enclosed box mount w/ vents was my next option if I didn't find that tank. Never had to look into further, but yours is a great idea for others!:thumb:

I'm not sure on the draw on the flourescents but its quite a bit more then an LED. I wasn't to worried about that though because I can't run real long on just the 12v battery with my furnace anyway so I plug into the generator. I think they give a lot better flood type light then a LED. I easily could have got by with less lights to it is really bright I think 3 down the center would have worked fine. I haven't had any problem with them starting when its cold down to 0 F so far. I still have my incandescent lights that came factory also for doing a quick check on the road ect. My backup lights are the 2X6 I think LEDs and with both switched on it lights up an area about 20ft behind the trailer for loading. Just make sure to put a diode in the line or your turn the pickup backup lights on to.

I had started with the idea of a underbelly tank to until I found all the free room up front. My trailer seems to sit lower then a lot also and I barely could have squeezed one between the axles that didn't hang lower then them.

We need to find a source on 24" surface mount interior lighting, much like the opti-brite in the trailswest trailers particularly.
125$ is just too much spend on LED's for the small energy savings

Another cheap option are the LED 16FT strips.

I bought 2 of those strips off Ebay for $25 total. Here's the specs:
  • View angle:120°
  • Color: Cool White
  • Working Voltage: 12VDC
  • LED Quantity: 300 LEDS Total
  • Total Current Draw: 2A(0.4A per meter)
  • Working Tempreture:-20 to 50°
  • Protection Rate: Waterproof
  • Luminous Flux: 1500 Lumens Total (300 Lumens per Meter)

I installed them along the top side panels. They worked great all last season.
I think the interior white panels help reflect the light better. They have double sided tape on them already, but I glued them up also.
You could buy the 600 qty version of those also. Double the light output, but current draw also. Here's an example of the 600 qty strip.

Cool White 5M 500CM Non-Waterproof 3528 SMD Flexible LED Strip Lights 600 leds

A cheaper option...
