Helmet recommendations?

So i've been using a fairly inexpensive HJC helmet for the past few years, and i've decided it is time to upgrade to something better.

I've seen some of the closed face helmets which seem to be used more by trail riders - do these helmets work for mountain riding? Or do they fog easily or other problems i'm not thinking about?

With my open faced helmet, my cheeks get extremely cold when hauling *** on the trail, and I don't have any way to do anything about it. I've tried pulling my neck gaitor up, but I don't have much room in my helmet.

At the same time, once I am off trail, shoveling and getting unstuck, I am overheating, goggles fogged and helmet soaked. I carry several sets of goggles and swap them through the day.

Also, my preference would be for something lightweight as well, that is somewhat funk-resistant. I still have not gotten the smell out from my last 4 day riding trip.

Anyone have any recommendations?

i like open face..509s helmets and goggles(509 aviators) and the quick strap to release the goggle when coming to a stop to prevent fogging

I really love my Klim F4 with 509 Aviators w/quickstraps. I wear glasses under my goggles, and I have found the F4 with all of its extra vents over my old Fly helmet helps a lot with fogging, with the glasses and the goggles.

There are some nice lightweight motocross helmets on the market. I also use an HJC that needs upgraded. I am going to find a lighter helmet next time to take the strain off the neck.

I have a fly carbon 2. It has snell rating where 509 dnt. A little bit mor money but worth it. Its made of kevlar and wieghs next to nothing. Up there with klim just not paying for the name.

X2!!! Love my helmet and sinister goggles! The Aviators scratch to easy. The F4 helmet isnt bad if you remove the cheek pads or get plastic surgery to remove your cheek bones. just my 2 cents!

I usually just wear the balaclava on the trail on the way in, then take it off.
For the record you don't have to buy a Fly Carbon helmet, any moto style helmet does the job fairly well. I have an HJC CLX4 Vapor or something right now, it is like 8 years old though. Might buy a new lid for next year.

this is crap, everyone has a preference and opinion, but they are not all the same. . . . . I wonder what a 8 year helmet will do for your noggin?. . . .

I think your opinion is crap myself. It isn't magically some crap helmet because it is older, it passes both Snell and DOT. A helmet is designed to be good for 1 big impact. Then the foam is crushed and no longer provides the level of protection it would prior. I've never hit anything or even dropped the thing... it still looks virtually brand new minus a few scratches. But like I said, being that it is older now I'm going to be replacing it.

Thanks for your concern though.

I would recommend NOT getting a full face! I used to have one and anytime I was off trail I couldn't get it to stop fogging! If I was you I'd get a balaclava and a helmet with a breathbox. The breathbox not only deflects your breath, but it also keeps your face warm when going down the trail. They are also very easy to put in and take out.

Shows your understanding of SNELL. SNELL certification requires the helmet to withstand TWO big impacts in the exact same spot on the helmet.

Hey, even better! I think I would probably replace it anyway though after one large impact.

The theory with Snell is you are riding a motorcycle, you get thrown from your bike or crash, you hit your head on the ground, you roll and then hit your head on the guard rail in the EXACT same spot.

Reality is that is extremely unlikely.
If that were to happen a secondary injury would probably kill you first.

So I already posted this on another thread so don't flip your lid and swear at this post. :face-icon-small-hap

I am down with a balaclava on an open face helmet. It will keep your cheeks warm. Closed face helmets fog up, are hot and generally make you look like a totally knob.

Wait till fall, buy the helmet below and you will be blessed:

The Dominator helmet is at the expo folks.

Everyone has been asking how it fits, is it really that light with it make me more attractive to the opposite sex.....you name it.

Go see it and fondle it.

Helmet that weighs 1250g (lighter than most carbon helmets)
+PATENTED direct injected liner to the shell
+ sweet helmet bag
+ Breath box
+ chin curtain
+ Extra set of cheek pads
= $249!!

here is some of the tech.

It ain't on sale yet but it will be this fall.

You will feel guilty buying it this fall and warm and fuzzy just checking it out. You can't loose.IMG_1690.jpg

I was in the same situation....looking for a new helmet, and wanting to go lightweight while i was at it. This is what i ended up with. It is a Suomy Mr Jump Monster Energy version. Weighs in at 1157 grams which is about 2 1/2 pounds. The lightest helmet i have ever worn and the most comfortable as well. Price was under $400 too :)

Cheers!
