Helmet Help...

I am planning to buy a new helemt this year. I had some problems with my goggles fogging last year and am looking for better equipment.
Are the flip up modular helmets any good for riding in the powder or should I stick with an open face and goggles?
Any recommended brands?
Thanks

What helmet do you have now?

I tried a multitude of things before I bought a "No Fog" and that killed any fogging problems I had, even with glasses (thank god for Lasik!)

Worth a shot if you already have good stuff. Stay away from the modular helmets, you'll find out why if you ever ride out west and run into someone who posts here :)

Looks like a great product. Which one do you have? I saw the one with the built in full head shroud... is the front of that one different than the others? How would this work with my under armor head shroud?

I have the one with the strap, I don't wear anything on my head, just a fleece neck warmer when it's cold out.

www.ruoutside.com makes a full head sock with no fog if that's what you're looking for. I've been thinking of giving one a try for the colder months.

I have a relatively low cost Bieffe open face helmet with Smith dual pane goggles. The system worked really well for the first couple years, but last season I had several problems with fogging up. New lenses and even my spare goggles did the same thing.
Maybe I will go with a better open face helmet - more venting options and the no fog mask. Also thinking about the turbo flow goggles.
Lasik rocks for sure!!!!!!!!!!
Is it hard to breathe through the no fog system????
I tried wearing a full head sock covering my mouth and nose, but had to pull it down on occasion to get enough air....

That's the route i went works perfect no more packing multiple pairs of goggles

I buy a new hat every year. In the last three years I have purchased a Shoei, a Troy lee, a KBC and for this year I bought a GMAX. I LOVE the troy lee and I really like the shoei. I like the fit of the KBC but I cant find a pair of goggles that fit into the helmet. It is te damndest thing I have ever seen. I havent tried the GMAX yet on the mountain but I do like the fit and it has no issues fitting goggles. The GMAX was $85. and is very light I think it is going to be a great low cost helmet. I think I paid about 150 for the kbc. A little over 200 for the shoei and you dont even want to know what a Troy lee runs these days. But The Troy lee is my favorite. followed by the shoei.

I have been wearing glasses since the 3rd grade and my oldest child is in the 5th grade. I have been wearing glasses a while.

Also, I am not affiliated with noone BUT I do sell SCOTT 89XI turbo goggles with quick strap.

For your glasses try coating the lens with BABY OIL and see if you can tolerate it with your eyes. Get a lent free cloth or tissue put some baby opil on it and carry it in a baggy. Will have to reapply when you wipe you glasses. This will help you lots.

All goggles and helmet visors should be double paned to minimize fogging.

1.Full helmet with glasses.

CAn keep the visor up until fog gone and then close the visor or leave it cracked open to balance the air flow so glasses don't fog.

Pro easy to open and close. Con is weight and visor is complex and expensive to replace. Not many choices for type of lens on visor.

You could also add a a heating element and or get a heated visor plus a 12 volt hook up on the sled. Con is the money and wires.

One manufacturer ... skidoo full size helmet has a mask which secures to your nose and mouth allowing the rider's breath to go in and out of ports on the side of the helmet.
I like this over the nofog. Why ... because both make a seal over your nose bridge where your glasses sit on your nose. The skidoo is not as far off your nose so you can set the glasses on the rubber of the mask where the nofog is to high on the nose to sit my glasses. Might be different for you ... every bodies face is different.

2. MX helmet with goggles

This all depends on ventilation. You can ride with your head turned and blow out the moisture from your glasses and goggles.

For I went with a QUICK STRAP from ROKO on the goggles. Can open and close the goggles very fast to allow access to your glasses.

Conclusion

Both types of helmets have an upside and downside. Like MX with quick strap a little better so to easily access glasses quicker plus goggles are cheaper and easier to replace than a visor.

NoFog mask. Most of the Alaska riders wear them. I wear mine with my MX style helmet down to -30.
NoFog is not false advertising, they work great.

If you want a new helmet get one. If you want to see where you're going get the NoFog.

question for those of you who use the nofog basic system, the one with the red strap that goes over the head, do you think that it will fit OVER this under armor shroud?

I wear this one beacuse of how thin it is and keeps me warm, and I almost always have the front part for the mouth pulled down, so no problems I would bet on the seal of the face....

I wear a Turtle Fur brand balaclava and the NoFog over it. I don't wear the baly up over my nose though. I pull it down onto my chin just below my lower lip so it doesn't get soaked with breath condensation. I also tug the front down to cover my eyebrows. I don't have issues with fog or frostbite with this set up and my goggles are nothing cosmic-Scott Turbos.

My guess is the NoFog will work with any balaclava/shroud.

I would think it would work might be able to have someone trim and tailor it around the mouth if it was to tight.

Awesome, rep for you.

I ride on the coldest days of cold and I always wear a balaclava on every ride. New helmet does not have breathe box support really, so I think this will be the best setup!

thanks
