I've only read a few articles and reviews about the lodging out at "trailhead" I want to plan a trip with some guys at work that like to ride but only have the flatlander.

What you need to know? Trails head is a set of cabins and lodge out on the hill where you can stay, it is not close to town though. Most people stay somewhere in deadwood and trail out every day. There is a lodge closer to town but still out in the hills called Rec springs resort I believe. Super 8 is in town but on the edge and you can ride from there if there is enough snow.

Short tracks are fine for riding in the Black Hills. I personally hate riding out of Deadwood/Lead and would much rather trailer to Trailshead or stay somewhere further west.

We stay in spearfish ( right on I 90) about 20 min form spearfish canyon lodge where you can drop the trailer off every morn or 45 min from trailshead lodge. the nice thing about staying in spearfish is that its in a town with tons of places to eat like applebees pizza ranch, etc they have multiple cheap nice hotels with hot tubs breakfast pools etc. Or you could stay at spearfish canyon lodge Its very nice but very expensive. You will do just fine with a short track in the hills. but the long tracks do come in handy when you really get into the trees but it depends on your skill as a rider. Also the Hills have hundreds of miles of very nice grommed trails.
Hopefully some of this helps.
