Helicopter expense split in the middle

For those of you that dont know my driveshaft broke on my 13 on the clutch side right on the end in the bearing last sat. I was helicoptered out Sun. So we replaced the shaft with another 13 shaft and will try it again. Everyone i have talked to said its the first they have heard of mine breaking where it did. Nothin to do with clamps and it comn apart. Anyhow my shop i deal with was pretty standup to say the least and paid for half the chopper bill. Thumbs up to M an M Performance in Kelowna BC. Thanks guys pretty stoked how they delt with my situation.

Would be even better if Poo developed a set of "cajones" and reimbursed you and your standup dealer(who should get a lot of positive pub for that move).

Impressive! Service like that will sell alot of sleds.

Good dealer.

When filling out a warranty claim to Polaris, you can type in any amount of Extra Expenses. I hope they wrote what they paid for the helicopter ride, on your warranty claim, so it's Polaris taking the loss, not them :)

Hopefully good-will news like that will spread as fast as the story of the breakage.

Sure be nice to see some pics. Did the shaft stub wear smaller (like a few pics on here) then break or was the shaft still full size when it broke.

Something to think about. If you buy or have a SPOT, you can purchase insurance as part of your annual subscription to their service that will pay for extraction. It is inexpensive. I believe that it is less than $10.00 a year. I have it. People who get into the backcountry would be well served to have this inexpensive insurance. The other benefits of the SPOT are very worthwhile and potentially life saving too. I used mine to get medical emergency crews to a severely injured friend several years ago. He nearly died on the mountain and very well might have if I had not had the SPOT equipment and service.

Sorry for going a little off-topic, but I think some clarification is necessary.

Are you referring to the GEOS insurance that you can get as an add-on to a SPOT subscription? This is to pay for an emergency search and rescue team to locate and extract an individual in the event of an emergency, and even professional SAR contractors. I don't think it is an extraction service that covers helicoptering a broken snowmobile out, or a person in a non SAR situation. What it really is aimed at is rescuing people in countries that don't have good SAR infrastructure already, or to help offset the cost of a SAR operation should you be billed for it. As part of the terms it has to be used in conjunction with a 911 (or related call) for emergency services. It's not to come pick you up because your sled broke down.

If you read some of the SPOT terms you will find that when you push the panic button, they call out the cavalry - whether it costs money or not. If you have the GEOS insurance, it helps offset any charges incurred. If you don't, you are liable for anything the SAR operation chooses to bill you.

Is there another service that covers non-emergency extraction (and equipment extraction) with a SPOT subscription? I can only find roadside and maritime assistance.

You are probably aware of all this, I just don't want someone to get the wrong idea.

Did the clutch side drive shaft bearing fail and the shaft spun inside the inner race until it wore so thin that it broke? I caught mine before the shaft failed but had it been left much longer the shaft would have failed and left my stranded.

If you use your spot for another person how does that work, are you the one liable for the bill. I have heard of people with the spot helping out others that are hurt, just wondering how that works for them.

Broke one on the clutch side on Sat.

Five miles off trail near Togwotee. It was a rental with about 2K miles. We had to get a sled and it took us 2 hours with 5 guys to get it back to the trail. The bearing was not bad, it just broke. We got 2 more days of free rental for draging it out.

In the case that I mentioned, the individual that I helped with my SPOT was liable for the various bills associated with his lifesaving situation. However, the helicopter (from St. Luke's RMC in Boise) donated the cost of their services including the paramedics in return for his story. That surely helped him a great deal although he did have personal insurance that would have covered some of that cost. He still had to have multiple surgeries and a relatively long hospital stay, rehab, etc.

I have to review my SPOT insurance (GEOS). I may have been incorrect about the extraction coverage mentioned above.
