Heat tape on the exhaust??

Just saw the thread on Rudes build with the heat wrap on the pipe to keep the heat under the hood down. (Nice wrap job by the way.)

I was thinking of doing the same thing. But, I did hear that generally it decreases horse power and it holds the moisture on the pipe rusting it to nothing in no time.

Is this true?? Anyone tried it in the past? I did heat wrap the pipe under the pull start last year to keep it from melting the insides of that. Got tired of replacing it and it worked great for that purpose. Have not checked the rust situation. Of course taking out the head light and getting some RAM air helped too.
 
yes need to know asap! if it is gonna f up my jetting and rob me of hp and reliabilty, i will remove it.
how is it different then cerramic coating besides holding more heat in the pipe?
 
I say a hot pipe is a happy pipe, you don't want to "cool" your pipe anyways ! If it gets too hot right to the point that you burn up your motor then you'll want to put a bigger stigner ID, not take your heat wrap off, but that won't happen since Jaws designed it, not ADB (I figure that's what happened with my 600 ADB/Jaws pipe with the reducing sleeve that had the stigner to be 38-39mm ID on my 8 hunnert, I was retaining too much heat in the pipe, which cause A LOT of wear on my pistons and rings). The more consistant the temperature the pipe will be the better it'll perform, Adding heat wrap will create an extra barrier for the cold air or snow not to "cool down" your pipe na dhave the sound wave travel at a different speed which will make the pipe work weird.

Not that I know a lot about heat wrap but I've never heard of heat wrap rubbing HP.

Hey Rude, can you measure the inside diameter of the stigner of that new 800 Pipe ? I'm really curious.
 
i know from experience that the heat wrap made my scooter run like poop...i tried jetting changes in both directions with no results, took wrap off and put jetting back to stock.perfect! maybe cause it was only a 85cc motor in a street bike. i do know my 503 hawk has the "can" wrapped

rude try it and see what happens...check plug readings often at 1st

What is your setup for your hawk and how long have you run it? I assume you have a 600 with the Jaws pipe. Noticed any difference before wrapping and after besides the noise reduction?
 
600, stock , pods, no setback, 10 in simmons hard ( no axis ) lowered 2 in. in rear to match the front. With the axis gone the front dropped 2 inches. A.D. hand guards and handlebar wind deflecter and tiny tach. Comet pri., cat roller 2nd. 6 to 9k .72 mph @ 8200. No diff. from wrapp except big noise red. Wrapping is supposed to give more hp. It keeps the heat going thru and not scavaging S.P.. Supposedly you lose power when this happens.

Sounds like you have a great setup!

Interested to hear with your whole pipe wrapped there hasn't been much loss in noticeable HP.

I called Mike at CPI Racing who does exhaust stuff and quized him since starting the thread. He said for snowmobiles there is a general 5-7 HP loss and the closer the wrap is to the engine block the worse it gets. Also that it rusts through the aftermarket light weight exhaust really fast but the thicker stock stuff holds up better. It has a lot to do with the sound waves and that they travel differently when the pipe is hot versus cold etc .
He made a point that he has not done much testing with the Hawks so he didn't know how much different it would be.

It's good to hear all this input. I have some so I might try it and see what happens. If you try yours Rude let us all know.
 
I think you make a good point about sound wave 007. This media around the pipe must affect the way that the sound wave travels, thus affecting the way that the pipe functions. If the tapers lengths, angles and other measurments on the pipe have been "calculated" or tested to work with the speed of sound at a certain temperatue (X value here), adding this wrap will probably screw up the whole equation of peak HP and you'll get a lower value.

From this theory on, you could probably wrap anything after the "expansion chamber" since the can is probably not affecting the equation as much.

That doesn't answer Ceramic coating though. Being closer to the paint it would sure not affect the equation as much as a wrap. And besides, if there were any HP loss, the aftermarket builders wouldn't offer it.
 
I asked earlier in this post about a chrome exhaust, but no one commented. I would appreciate any info anyone can provide. He also had his new custom made exhaust chromed, so we both would benefit from this knowledge.

I spoke with this guy for quite a while the other night. He bought an almost new '04' 600 and is almost finished putting an 800 in it.

He did not know of this site and all the information contained here. Someone, perhaps Rude, should tell him the other issues he may have to contend with with the extra power of the 800. Such as, will he need steel a jackshaft, etc?

I think there's a good chance I've talked him into coming to HawkFest.

A new hawker to the nest!

I wrapped the Jaws pipe in the 04 600 I have been working on (replaced the rings etc) and took her out for the first ride since I found her. Granted it was on 8 inches of snow since the snow dance isn't working here too well yet. However, she ran quite well.

Since she is new to me I will have to have more seat time but the plugs looked golden brown and she seems to have good pull all the way through the throttle. Hopefully, its won't silently kill the engine or something if its on because it is a lot quieter and kept the underhood heat down...

Any luck trying out yours Rude?
