Hearing about closure of St Helens?

I got a call from a friend today telling me that he was texted about a hearing tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at the Cowlitz County courthouse regarding some sort of closure pertaining to snowmobiles on St Helens. Can anyone validate this rumor? Sent a message to the WA SAWS rep and waiting for a reply.

The next meeting is Thursday (May 15) from 5:30-9:00 at the Cowlitz Co. Administration Building, 207, 4th Ave., Kelso, WA

"You should attend tomorrow's meeting with your friends, to get your voices heard, but there is no immediate closure planned at this meeting that SAWS is aware of. These are on going meetings to discuss this issue. See our previous SAWS email, and two recent articles on this issue."

The next meeting is April 24 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Cowlitz County Administration Building and will focus on recreation.

Lets get as many people there as possible to show support to our sport!:beer;

Imagine why this would happen:eek: Maybe the County, city, state concerned about sledders falling in the crater and possible lawsuits:(.

This was possibly brought on by our own fellow sledders:(. Thanks guys.

H20SKE- If the state were to take that mentality the climbing the mountain should be off limits to everyone, climbers too cuz we may fall in and then sue.

The state has been looking to close the mountain for years from sledding and possibly turn it into a wilderness area or a national park. It has nothing to do with the snowmobiler who fell into the crater, although they may try to use that as sometype of ammunition.

It is legal to ride on the mountain, if you would like that to continue, please make you voices heard.

they have been talking about closing it for a few years now, I don't think it has to do with the sledder

its a little strange that they open the mountian back up since it is active right now and has been since 04. it has everything to do with that j. a. not being smart about being on the mountian. as for the mountain itself it is in skamania co. why is this meeting in a different co.

It actually has nothing to do with the guy falling in...that just wont help our cause. This is an ongoing set of hearings with a recommendation due late this year. And it's a volcano, it has been active to some degree forever. The volcanoes in Hawaii are much more active and people are allowed to walk on the cooling lava. If you're worried about it, don't ride it.

As for the mountain (and monument area which is what these meetings/public forums are about) being in Skamania County, parts of it are but there are also parts in Cowlitz and Lewis Counties. Check out the following link and you can learn a bit more about it. The minutes from this week's meeting aren't posted yet but will be soon.

The next meeting is May 15th from 5:30 to 9:00. You should go St. Hellens rider, just don't speak as that could also hurt our cause:rolleyes:

900 RMK 166- Well said and I agree...

Too all who think this is about falling in the crater-
Obviously, anyone falling into the crater of a volcano, could possibly stir up controversy if an area should be closed from anyone being on the mountain, basically the man(government) coming in and saying let me tell you what you should do, to which I say Kiss the back side of my tub of country crock... :)

Don't let these other quite mountains fool you. The thought that any of our cascade volcanoes are extinct is just ridiculous. Mt. St Helens taught us that on May 18th 1980. Mt Rainier is climbed and summitted by thousands of hikers everyday and if it decided to blow, U are screwed. For that matter, people die up there every year too, it's part of the sport as it is part of our sport. Risk are taken and sometimes they do not always work out for the good.

BUT Let's not confuse the issue with someone who climbed to the top of the Volcano and fell in, it has nothing to do with the potential closure of this land. This is all about a land use issue or land grab as I like to call it. It's just another attempt at trying to abolish motorized recreation.

Make sure you have the facts about certain subjects before talking it up or bad mouthing something or someone. A person could inadvertently give your group, club or whatever a bad name. Mt St Helens is open for snowmobile riding and I for one am hopefully it will continue to be.

i am fully aware its a volcanoe. i have rode on the it since i was 12. all i am saying is if you have a clue about the mountain youd know that it has a crater, and it is a verticle drop into the crater, therefore it makes sense that snow builds up and makes a large cornace at the top. use your head. warm day out, standing on a cornace with an overhang above a crater that has a two thousand foot drop ( at least next to dogshead it does) sounds like a great recipe for disaster.

I have been on the top of that mountain many times. never fell in. Imagine that. dont direct your sarcasm towards me dude. were you the guy that fell in? what side of the crater did you fall in at.

the mountian was closed in 04. In 05 and you werent suppose to go above 4500 or 5000 on its southern and western flanks. I was told by the ranger up at the snowpark on the cougar side that you were not suppose to go ride it above the plains of abraham on the eastside.
