Heads Up on "Harmonized Sales Tax"

This is a bit of a "political" post so Administrator go ahead and move it if you must but not much in the political section concerns us Canucks, (Obama, Obama, Obama) so don't generally go there. Heads up for Canadians purchasing sleds. Just talking with my neighbor yesterday who is a Canadian MP and he informed me that with this Fricken "Harmonized" sales tax coming soon, you will now have to pay 12% tax (GST-5% and PST-7% combined):mad: on used vehicle "private" purchases. That's right, now GST applies to used vehicle "private" purchases. Used to be if you bought a car from car lot, then you paid both GST and PST. Private purchases meant no GST. Not any more! I'm suspecting that this is also going to apply to sleds as well. Now when you register a sled, it sounds as though you will be paying 12% instead of the old 7%. So a purchase of a used sled for $5000 means you will be paying $600 in taxes instead of $350. I've got two to register from recent purchases so gotta do it before this Crap comes into play. :(

This once again proves that our Libs have their heads so far up their azzes they can't see what is actually happening in this province. We can thank all the d-bags in the lower mainland for voting these guys bag in. This is absolutely the worst time in history to be introducing a new tax. By the time the idiots that voted these a-holes back in realize their error, BC is gonna be a third world province.

Did I mention how much I despise the Liberals:mad::mad:?

I despise talking politics but you're dead on IMO.:beer;

So are you saying that the BC provincial government wants to tax private used vehicle sales, or is this a federal program? Did you guys always have to pay PST on a private used vehicle purchase before? In Alberta there is no GST on private vehicle sales. I can never understand why Canadians vote for left wing governments, I hope that this is not being brought in by the federal Conservatives!

As long as I can remember there has been provincial sales tax (PST) on "all vehicle purchases", new or used, private sale or through a dealership. GST is currently only charged on vehicles new or used purchased "through a dealer", along with PST. No GST presently charged on used vehicles purchased privately. With the incoming HST it will now be 12% across the board (GST and PST combined) Sounds as though this will now be the case when you register your sled as well. :mad: The term, "getting screwed without getting kissed" comes to mind. Hey, they gotta pay for the fricken Olympics somehow.:face-icon-small-con

Wow that blows, I guess that the only way to get around that is to have the seller put a lower price on the bill of sale. Twelve percent on a big dollar purchase is going to be hard to swallow. Notice how easy it is to use the terms blows and swallows when talking politics!!!

"BLOWS" is right and that is exactly what everyone has been doing is lowering the purchase price on the bill of sale. Don't like to lie but hey....it's not like our government hasn't embellished on a few promises in the past...... or driven drunk.;)

Hey Kris how ya doin Bud? Yes the f'in Liberals piss me off, especially that d'bag we call a premier. I'm doin OK, healin up fine, but that bloody horse is goin to the sale this month. If I could have stood up I would have shot him right there in the pasture. How's things in 100 mile, you still there?

Cheers;
Shane

HST has been applied here for a while - for imported machines we pay the gst portion at the border and the pst portion when we register it ..... no biggie though as we buy our machines through our business and then claim the tax (hst) as an input credit ... so its a wash ... no business is a nother story though.

The libs in B.C are the "right wing party"........who else are you gonna vote for..........the fricken money suckin NDP?

and yes the h-tax is bulls$%^!!!!

Can you name the other provinces that have this already?, we aint the first believe it or not
Dont get me wrong, I think I pay too much freakin tax already but our overly fat govt (and I dont think anyone else could do it any better) has a big hole to dig
out of, Nobody wants to say it but the olympics could not have come at a worse time

Well as far as i am concerned it is time to tighten the budget, i won't be eating out to much, driving to much, i have a new truck and sled so they are going to have to last me longer now. These guys are not going to put us into worse shape than we are already in its sad, its just a big tax grab and its all over the freakin olympics which i am sorry to say i won't be able to afford to go to anymore just like the rest of the province. If they would have done this about four years ago it may have not been too bad but thier timing is terrible. I won't stop riding every weekend and with the money i save in taxes it should just about pay for my fuel, i know they are going to get me some way but now i am going to be smarter and see what i can do to pay less taxes at least in the form of the HST Idiot bastards anyways...

I agree....kind of.....but why is it that we always get compared to provinces with more sales taxes, instead of somewhere like Alberta with less? And why do our politicians always want us to be like someone else anyway? What's wrong with being different?

excuse me.. but could you add BEER to that list... :face-icon-small-hap

When I originally asked our local MLA about this he gave me the same answer. Got an e-mail from him today and he now says no, only 7% will be collected same as we pay now. What I get from this is....no one really knows how this HST crap is going to work yet!

No wonder the public is against it....it's impossible to figure out how it's going to effect us! :confused:

You have to start shopping 1 province to the east. If I recall the BC government taxes you when you register. I wonder if you can register a sled in AB if you're a BC resident? Might be worth the trip.
