sometimes when i start my sled my headlight wont be on if i push the dimmer switch it will come on . could this be the voltage regulator, or just the dimmer switch,

If it is just the headlight its probably not the VR. I have seen the headlight dimmer switch fail a few times. When the dimmer switch is starting to fail it will do as you describe.

Sounds like bad contacts in the dimmer switch to me. Once you get the headlight on, does it work on both high beam and low beam?

We had that same issue and finally lost headlight completely.

Took apart the handlebar switch housing and the contacts had melted the plastic between the high/low contact points and prevented contact.

I removed ALL of the movable pieces and just soldered both the high and low contacts together (keeps it on high full time)...problem solved.
