Headlight delete, pros-cons, whats people doing

I have been thinking about doing the BDX headlight delete.

Since most folks on boost are doing some variation on a delete I would ask here.

If I do a delete I am going to add a helmet mounted light.

Thoughts?

I run a light weight hood(or no hood) that has no lights. Haven't had headlights for about 6 years on my main ride. My buddies run tiny fog lights on their bars. I should get a helmet light cause someday?????

My backup ride has lights, if I do a deliberate night excursion.

I love BDX stuff but the headlight delete imo is their worst product. Taking out the headlights allows you the chance to vent, and even the "vented' version sucks for that.

Mtn fit, modrods, and few other companies all make good headlight deletes that allow venting & are very tough.

this is the mtn fit venting

I have the bdx kit and like it, but venting would be more functional. 2cool makes a nice vent for the m i believe. I would have went with that if i would have known at the time. I carry a lead dog helmet light in my backpack and prefer it over stock lights. Having light where you look is much better than a set straight line in my opinion.

besides improved venting, about how much weight loss would a person get with the new mountain fit headlight kit?

Available mid August, vented delete with lights, just waiting on our order of lights to arrive. cost around 150.00 complete, final version will be plug and play.

You taking pre-orders on that? I've been waiting for that one for awhile now!

i'm told a stock hood with speedometer weighs 27 lbs

Mtn fit hood weighs around 6 or 7 lbs
Diamond s hood for m weighs 6 lbs I weighed mine so a savings of 20 lbs on the nose

Looks like a brother and sister pair of M's procreated..Good idea though...if he ever responds back to you... First hood I ordered from mtn fit came in about a week, the second one, I waited for 6 months and finally caught up with him at the Denver snow show, where he had a pile for sale. One of those WTF moments. Like his products but I won't deal with un-reliable vendors. This was a few years ago, so maybe they've gotten their act together.

A stripped M hood weighs 10 pounds.

I put on a mtn fit becase my stocker was busted up, otherwise I'd keep the stocker. By the time I got my gauge on, some hinges, lights, a fabbed up plenum, and an aluminum frame I was up to 13 pounds.

Mtn. fit "doesn't fit" when you get it. You have to do extensive trimming to the base to get it to fit right (PITA) and you need to figure out a way to hinge it. They're so floppy I ended up welding up an aluminum tube frame to keep it from collapsing when i rolled my sled out of a stuck (another big PITA).

They are cheap though, made out of some very tough plastic, and do look OK. After my dealings with getting the last hood from him though, i'm done with mtn fit. It's not that bad of an option, just know what your getting isn't ready to just slap on and be ready for some possible vendor issues. To do over, I'd get a fabric/mesh hood on a rigid frame or look for a used stocker.

Same

I made my own. Abs plastic with pet screen wrapped and glued. Worked really well. I carry a helmet light as well. it's so much better than stock headlight for backcountry get you home situations. Point and help buddies who are stuck. Point the path up a hill for a buddy ridin ahead. Nothing but benefits. The stock hood with no lights, no foam, no nothing is SUPER light. As bushy said find a stock one from someone. I looked at mtn fit as well, went with stock for the reasons bushy mentioned, the ability to easiily mount it was worth it. Ill post a pic tonight. Just black on black.
