Heading to Utah-- riding Mon, Tues, Wed?...where?

Heading out to Utah Sunday afternoon. Need to pick up a sled at MPI and deliver to New Mexico-- not on a fixed schedule.

Looks like Logan is going to get pounded on Sat night and Monday. Avy danger seems high already and with sustained winds predicted, wind loaded slopes will be even worse.

The question is, where would Utah based SnoWesters recommend? My buddy Mark (mud99) and I are driving across from Tahoe on 80 and could ride SLC, north, south, or wherever.

We will be riding 163 Pro RMKs, and even in safe conditions we ARE NOT chute rippers. We like trees, boondocking, technical climbs (again, not chute rippers). The way the season has been in Tahoe I'd be happy making pow turns in a field!

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Murph

If you are thinking logan area I would suggest the Sinks. It is past Tony grove and Fraklin basin just before you head down to Bear Lake and there is a lot of open meadows and some good tress to play in without the steep avy prone hills. Just watch out for the Sink holes. Not too many of them any more but there are a few that can really cause a great day to turn ugly pretty quick.

Thanks for the responses. Do we need out of state permits for Utah?

Any recommendations on cheap places to stay? We don't need any nightlife, just pow turns and fun tree lines.

Any shops in the area you recommend if we need parts?

I was up in the Uintas near tower mountain earlier this week and the snow was surprisingly good. 1-2' new behind tower and I think they have had a foot since. Lots of areas to to some fun tree climbing where it is safe. Wherever you go watch for the wind loaded slopes. With the coming storms everywhere should be plenty deep but just make sure you know where the bad zones are and please bring your avy gear.

Always ride with Avy gear. Wet Tahoe snow will kill you quick.

Any Utah snowmobile sites with parking area maps, ride maps, etc?

If your looking for trees, either lake creek (Heber city) or fairview. Either area is close to towns. Lake creek is abot 15 miles out of town. Skyline is about 8 miles out of fairview. There is a polaris dealer in both towns. Cox automotive in fairview has a reputation as one of the best customer service dealers around. Fast trax has mixed reviews (from what I have heard). As for snow, they are about equal right now. Both are small towns, Heber is quite a bit bigger then fairview. Although there is just about everything you would need in both areas. If you are looking for someone to ride with and maybe show you around just let us know, plenty of guys on here would be more than happy to show you a good time. Also, as stated above, the avy danger in the entire state of Utah is HIGH, and will continue to be until summer !! There is a very weak layer under our snow.

Thanks for the responses.

Any ride reports from this weekend?

Driving across today.

Rode Fairview Friday, found endless powder in the trees. Anything in sun was hard pack. We triggered a Few slides, just make sure and stay off the hills. The way the weather looks you might wait and see.what gets pounded, and chase it. Nice thing of Fairview, is from the parking lot you are riding whatever you want. trail, open field, trees.

Today

Road endless powder today. Went up cub River then into fraklin basin and beaver creek. Epic day today a foot of new snow and hardly anyone else around and blus skies. Would recommend logan canyon and beaver creek lodge. Powder and trees thats what im talking about.

Thanks for the updates.

Keep the updates/ suggestions/ observations coming.

Staying near SLC airport tonight, hitting somewhere early tomorrow. Our sleds need out of state permits, does the truck need a parking permit?

Thanks,
Murph

If you're still in town, I'll be riding out of Woodland tomorrow with one other friend, should be at the lot around 10:45. We'll be riding mellow rolling fields, was up there on Saturday and it was super fun. If you'd like to join, you're welcome to do so, just be at the lot. To get there from SLC, take 80 east, to 40 east , to 248 east. When you get into Kamas, make a right at the light, this will take you south at the first light (flashing) you get to (Town of Francis) make a left, you dead end at the trail head. I've got a black Chevy Silverado, with a silver Mission trailer.
