Heading to CO March 4th where should we go?

We are going to CO March 4th where should we go? Forecast looks pretty good for some fresh snow. Never ridden in CO before and the snow in Cooke City looks pretty poor.

I'd say it really depends on how far you want to drive and what kind of riding you're into. It appears that just about everyone is getting good snow now. Looks like Rabbit Ears and that area just got hit good.

Wolf Creek and the southwest part of the state got hit good last weekend, 42" from that storm, and another 1-2 feet expected this weekend.

I don't think you can really go wrong right now riding anywhere.

Yup, anywhere in the State except Grand Mesa, and it may be good to go by then.

Joel Gratz has Southern Colorado getting 50 inches over the next 5 days. Winter is finally here.

scratch my previous comment-I just read the forecast on opensnow.com and it is supposed to snow 3-5 feet down around wolf creek from Friday night through Wednesday! If that actually happens I don't think you could beat that riding.

Where are you coming from? It's true that Southern Colorado will have epic snow, but maybe too epic. 3-4 feet is tough riding for locals used to the altitude. For someone coming from sea level with shorter-tracked sleds, it may be way too much to handle.

Grand Lake would be a shorter drive if you're coming from the East, and although we probably won't get 3-4 feet of fresh like Wolf Creek, the 1-2 feet we get may be more manageable and fun for you.

Coming from Minnesota. No short tracks! Ha. Thanks for replies! Very helpful. We are very experienced mountain riders. only play in the trees and creek bottoms. normally ride cooke city but they don't have the best snow. Please keep info coming

There is a whole lot of truth there. Today, as a local I went up on Red Mtn Pass. The pass is over 11,000 feet, riding goes up from there. There was 3 feet from the weekend storm and nearly another new foot from last night. I rode for 2 hours, I was bad stuck three times in those two hours in a place I know. You couldn't climb anything. I went to ride up around this little spruce, I even had a good run but it wasn't happening... The trench shows the fresh snow. It was a lot of work, bringing friends tomorrow!

I would not recommend 3-5 feet of fresh to too many people unless you like being stuck more than riding.

We are flatlanders! We are usually stuck more than riding.
All kidding aside, I have been in those conditions and I will never complain about getting stuck down hill. That picture gives me a big snow-boner. :face-icon-small-coo

Well, I am a former flatlander, I understand the allure. We took out my riding buddies flatlander brothers and father a couple of weeks ago. Those guys were stuck all day long before it snowed. Still had a great time.

If you are willing to make the extra drive, like 5-6 hours past Denver, you are likely to find some pretty epic powder.

NOAA is calling for up to 86" of snow at Wolf Creek by Sunday night. Like was posted above, there are times when it is too deep, contrary to what some say. Really nice to see this storm though. Still pretty low on the Mesa, and doesn't look like its going to get too much out of this storm either.

It sounds like blasphemy, but there is truth to the "too much snow ride in." I took this last Monday off of work and went riding. There was about 3 feet of unsettled snow. My sled-a stock 2012 Pro-was having no problems on the flats, but climbing anything was just a recipe for getting stuck.

Yep, just like my pic, stock '14 Pro. Normally you can ride up to the left, make a short climb, loop around and come back down past the little tree. I fully expected to at least get up through the gap but MAN, that snow got deep and soft quickly. I should have known, that was my third stick in under 2 hours just farting around on the flats!

I think I probably need to go out and practice some more tomorrow, yesterday was so great...

It's late Sunday afternoon and I've ridden the last 3 days. Two of those three days were some of the best riding I've ever had in my meager 5 years on a sled. I rode Beaver Meadows and Lemon, for more info I'd go to San Juan Sledders website (I don't know the exact website address off the top of my head, just Google it). All the info you need is on that website.

Or you can go to Wolf Creek-I didn't just because I'm assuming it was probably crowded, I don't know that for sure, perhaps someone else can chime in. I'd say at this point after looking at the ski area reports around the state and opensnow that if you're going to do a trip it should be to southwest CO. This latest storm dumped the most here and everywhere around here is good.

I almost forgot-Molas Pass, Red Mountain Pass and that whole area have as much snow as anyone else. I don't know if you'll still be in town on March 6th, but I'll be off that day and wanting to ride. I'm a former flatlander from WI, but have lived out here for 17 years. I won't hold it against you that you're from MN (the Vikings suck). PM if you want to meet up.

Had a phenomenal ride today. Near the wolf creek area.
Stuck in the trees all day. Thanks joetroop for showing us around!

Snow conditions

What are the snow conditions in your area as of 3/8/15? I live in ca. and do not want to hang it up yet, went to Idaho last week ,snow very hard after we got up to it.Thanks for any response.

Area near Wild Skies Cabins in NW CO has the snow and more on the way

Since Feb 20th or so we have had over 6 feet of snow and it stayed cold until two days ago. Although the last couple days were warm and some snow has melted, we have a phenomenal base, still loads of untracked powder and another storm on the way for Wednesday. We have March 10-13 available and again March 20-25.

Search the Colorado forum for post from snowmobilers from this season about our location. We are the only place available to the public and open in the winter in our entire area (over 230,000+ acres of riding terrain) and our cabin is ride in/out from the front door.

Cheers,
Lisa

I must have read this wrong as Grand Mesa has 800 square miles of riding and ride from cabins...starting at 65.00 a night. Or did I misunderstand this?

Yeah the wildskies people are a bit clueless when it comes to Colorado riding. Mesa has an amazing amount of riding with some great cabin deals and killer people

800 sq mile is right.. ride in and out from the cabin right to the gnar

for the math challenged ... like myself --- 800 square miles == 512000 acres
